I have just read a good tip on keeping Slugs away from your containers-
"Spray the rim of the pot every few weeks with WD40"
Apparently slugs hate the smell and keep away-- Has anyone tried this and does it work?

Really ? Might have a go with that. My Mum invested in some copper tape for her pots with Hosta's in, they usually decemate them but it worked. It is quite an expensive way of doing it but if it works its worth it. Trouble is my Hosta's are in the garden can you get copper collar type thingys does anyone know?

My BiL smears a layer of vaseline around the his vulnerable pots..apparently they don't like moving over the viscous surface. (and less smelly than WD40)

Yes they exist but are very expensive. Besides your Hosta will overhang the band and before you know it you have a slug climbing across into its own private little munch heaven. I noticed that the Hosta that are near the brooklet and get lots of moisture are almost slug free but the ones deeper in the border ( dryer ) get eaten badly.

It is snails which do the most damage to Hostas and WD40 on pot rims works on them too.

Now you have surprised me OB - we have very few Snails here and when I see one they are tiny, but we have masses of slugs and my hostas are in tubs now because they were just being eaten to death.
However snails or slugs - totally irrelevant....we can get WD40 here as well so I shall certainly be giving it a try.

Someone asked about slug rings. Here's the link: www.slugrings.co.uk/I heard about WD40 too late to save my hostas last year; willing to try anything as I have a damp garden. On the Tithe Map of 18?? this area is called Further Wet Edge

My slug tip is to start putting pellets out at the end of February/beginning of March. My garden was totally overgrown and neglected when I bought the house. First year of being there, the slugs enjoyed many a free lunch/dinner/breakfast etc on my plants (nibbled my delphiniums to a small stump) - every night I was out there with my scissors, murdering them.
Last year, I started sprinkling pellets around during the last weekend in February ... slug population a lot less than the year before.
This year, sprinkled pellets in March ... I have to say that I have got 6 strawberry plants in the ground, 3 hostas growing back and 6 tomato plants in a bag along the side of my house ... none of which appear to have been nibbled yet. I still go out on "slug watch" but I just don't see them - the odd one here & there.

I'll be using the WD40 tip, and if it doesn't get rid of slugs it won't matter, because I could smell it all day. Yummy. ;D Wonder if it might be cheaper to buy a bit of copper sheeting and cut it up with scissors? When I had lead put on part of my roof, it was underlined with copper, and the man left me a small strip.

I've bought 2 cloves of garlic so I'm going to boil it up in water and spray it on the hostasand see if it works
