We have been invaded by magpies. If I put out a fat ball for the Blue Tits they rip it out of the netting and steal it within minutes. Has anyone got a good way of dealing with this?

I've created a hanging globe by using 2 x 14" hanging baskets. Wiring an edge together in two places to form a hinge and using one of the free hangers (that occasionally come with the fat balls) hooked up inside for the balls. the "lid" stays closed by wedging it inside the spring clips of the hanging chains. It was primarily to keep the pigeons and starlings out, but the starling babies could squeeze through the holes ! I certainly wasn't going to pay £25 odd for a globe and this contraption has worked well and now the starlings have got bigger they've buggared off and left the sparras to it. ;D Have just looked on that size GW and they have one of the hangers there for £1.95. Do they think we're made of money? £28.99 for a globe ? Aye, that'll be right ..........NOT ! ;D

Those prices make your eyes water, don't they - I think I shall try and manufacture something myself on the lines of your hanging baskets!
We always have the odd magpie here but the latest lot are this years babies, they go round mob-handed and are quite clever. I'm hoping they will find other places to haunt soon. It's a pity they are so destructive because they are very striking birds.

Brilliant pictures. My magpies wouldn't stand still for a photo, they usually disappear - briefly - at any movement they notice inside the windows. I think one of their number is the watchman and the rest follow his lead.

love your feeder mrs i wouldn't dream of paying those sort of prices for bird feeders i have a bird table made by mr gw & my washing line feeders but i'm tempted to make your ball feeder to keep mr squirrel from munching his way through all the food in the winter ...he's a greedy guts

thanks peeps. as you can see, i tried to keep out the starlings by winding extra wire to divide the holes in two. didn't work, they still got in lmao. just love your robin GW but if i left my balls out like that ( ) the pigeons would be hanging from the rafters and grab the lot.

Hi Mrskp
What a good invention, i hope youve got copyright you dont want anyone taking the credit, i think its great ive got a catapult for scaring off magpies and any other unwanted visitor to the garden, I DONT hit them i just fire it near them and this usually scares them off.
Well done regards karenwl

What a clever idea! We haven't really got any large birds in our garden at the moment apart from seagulls and they can't land where the fat balls are to peck at them and we gave up on nut feeders and stick to seeds now.

Will make me feel happier as I now have 3 cats coming into the gd eyeing up my Sparrows.
