In the 1920's One of the biggest parks in Brighton, preston park, created a sunken "Italian" garden. Over the decades, this garden has changed considerably and many years ago, was turned into a rose garden. However, lack of money, knowlegable staff and change of contractors lead to the garden going downhill and the roses looking awful. But 3 years ago, we were given the green light by the national lottery and English heritage to completely re-vamp the garden. All the beds had the soil removed to a depth of 12" (all the roses were obviously discarded), new soil added and completely replanted. As a result, we now have one of the best rose gardens to be seen in a municiple garden. 3,500 new roses were planted by David Austin and his team who spent weeks down in Brighton planning and planting with us. As you walk into the garden, you are smacked in the face by a riot of colour and just as you get up from that, you're smacked again by the glorious scent. My only critisism is that there are too many pink and dark red roses....not enough vibrant yellows, scarlets and whites. These photos really don't do the garden justice but i hope you appreciate them

Wonderful!! Andy you are so lucky that you can see and smell them in person.
