This is such a lovely thread - I always think bees look like happy contented little creatures.
We saw a bee-hive on holiday. The owners had put plastic sides inside the hive so that we could open it up and see inside without disturbing the bees too much. He'd also put three sides of the hive inside a shed with the front opening to the outside world and keeping the bees out of the shed. We watched the comings and goings for ages - and also watched a couple of wasps trying to get in. It was amazing how calm the bees were until the wasps actually landed on the platform by the entrance - the wasp soon buzzed off!!!

Nowhere near as good as some of the beauties on here (pics, not Bumbles - they're all beautiful) but so chuffed that I managed to get one

Gosh! Doesn't the yellow and red really set it all off, when you'd expect those colours to blur the natural beauty of the bee. Absolutely fascinating.

Lovely photos. We have had an awful lot of bees in the garden this year and it has been a delight to watch them.

While I was repotting my lilies this aft I was startled by a loud buzzing - kept looking round for something big! Then spotted this (rushed to get camera) - Helped it right itself Gave it a knowing look And gently placed it on my sedum Good job I didn't just shove my hand in and grab a handful of soil (which I had done with the first couple of pots!) I've just seen a Bumbly!!! ( Sorry, that's Bumble Bee to normal people ) Anyone else seen one this late in the year ? ( been quite nice out today though ) It didn't seem interested in what few flowers I've still got, just bumbled about a bit and bumbled off.

What wonderful photos...clever lot you are. As some of you may recollect (Skarloey!?) I am fascinated by bombus bombus...and have a book detailing the British species...true bumble bees, 'cuckoo' bees, and mimics (generally flies)...in fact the book has 6 pages devoted to bee genitalia or Bee Porn as I call it. I have a few pics of bees in flowers taken in the summer of 2006 on Photobucket..but this year I've hardly posted any garden pics at all...it's been SUCH a disappointing year....the bees have still been hard at work tho as my peas are still producing lots of pods.
