Anyone being invaded by those big 'orrible black buggers that run across your carpet at this time of year Must've been a good year because i've thrown out about 8 in the last 2 weeks. Oh....and they can bite. I've seen someone who had two little bite marks from one of them.....although they are totally harmless. Andy

Yep, Andy, we have had a few. When we came back from our hols, week last Saturday, I had to have a look around (OH hates spiders) and found two and one dead in the bin in the downstairs loo!! How it got in there and not able to come back out is anyone's guess!! I asked OH, only the other day, why are they called house spiders, when I reckon you would find them in a deserted house on a deserted island? Where do they come from? Keith

They really can get some speed up , can't they? I always feel sorry for folk with a phobia, because they come out of nowhere.

They do bite and can cause a nasty swelling. A pint pot and a bit of cardboard is the best bet to catch them or failing that the hoover if they aren't too big to go up or a brave cat

I've had quite a few here, I tried the pint glass way but sometimes it's not big enough to go over them.
They are HUGE this year.

I'm sure someone will put me right but the way I see it house spiders don't make huge webs and they hunt.

Can someone show me a picture of the type of spider you mean ? To me, a house spider is one of these..... They're as soft as anything and don't bite. I pick them up all the time and have never been bitten. A garden spider is one of these.... I also pick these up and they don't bite either !! FA x

FA, if you could see me in the morning with a bamboo in hand as I walk through the garden, I should paint the cane white and I would look like a blind person - the garden spiders are everywhere and I am fed up with getting a face full of web and spiders in my hair. Garden spiders - no problem, its the big black ones that take you by surprise and they do bite so watch out.

Jlottie - I don't know what big black spiders you mean. We do get some black spiders here with sort of fat bodies and stubby legs. Some can be big (ish) but not anywhere near the size that the type in my first picture get. Some of them are massive !! Is that what you mean ?

FA, they are the ones that fill the bottom of a pint pot and are seriously hunched, and can run and jump at frightening speed, clasp their legs round the hoover tube and refuse to let go and have nasty mandibles that sink into flesh - apart from that they are no problem at all Perhaps down south they look a bit bigger, been googling and found this info www.britishspiders.org.uk/html/bas.php?page=faq&faq=47OH has been bitten in the past whilst showing me that there is nothing to be scared of Some people can get an allergic reaction.

I still never forget the spider we had many moons ago. My wife and I started in a residential caravan and one evening when she went to the loo, I heard a huge scream. I rushed through to find out what the problem was. She was sitting on the loo (obviously!) one arm stretched out, looking pale and by this time speechless. I traced her point to the sink and what I found, even made me jump! It was either a house spider on steroids or an escaped something!! Sadly it's life ended fairly quickly, as there was no way my wife would let me pick it up and take it outside, just in case it came back in again. I 100% believe, this was not a house spider, as this was BIG and I have seen some big house spiders before and this was twice the size, at least, of the biggist I have seen!! I knew there were a few neighbours, who kept exotics, but not sure if spiders was one of them! I never did find out, as I didn't want the sorry I killed one of your pets, story! Never seen one since and the house spiders I get now, just get cornered and put outside. Whether they are the ones I find again a few days later, I will never know!! Maybe I should have posted this tomorrow morning, just in case anyone has nightmares! My wife did, for weeks afterwards! She still has trouble talking about it and scared (petrified) of most spiders now. I can't even pick one up now if she is there, have to use a glass, as in her eyes, my hand that may touch her, picked it up. Though I believe she is 'slowly' getting better! I have nearly cured her of her fear of moths, but that is a different thread! Keith

;D Love this thread. We have house spiders. Yep they run and jump like mad but I have never been bitten. And I play with them. Tap them to see them jump. As for the garden ones, there still are not that many out but why they always have to make their webs across paths? Got a mouth full again. Only when they start making gourmet webs will I not mind.
