I loved slow worms as a youngster (aged 10). We moved to Devon from Lancashire, and there were loads in a small wood we used to play in. They are so smooth - although I believe you are not allowed to pick them up these days unless you are 'licensed' - they never seemed to be bothered by our handling them, they just slithered off back into the woods.

I've got slow worms on the allotment, the first time I saw one is scared me silly as I didn't know what it was. They live under the compost pile and I have to be careful when I turn it. Found a couple of dead ones too and I'm not sure if its the birds or the cat that always seems to be there
