Hello friends,
I was distressed to see Sweetleaf’s post about the board no longer being a happy place, and have been wondering what we can do to rectify the situation. In the virtual as in the real world, it is inevitable that we will have a range of strongly-held opinions, political or otherwise. The issue here is to ensure that we do not allow those opinions to spill over into what we have in common - a passion for gardening. Incidentally, I admit that I have also been guilty of this more than once! Perhaps a code of conduct, which we would ask all members to read and 'sign up' to, would go some way towards alleviating the situation. This is just a suggestion:
GW is a community of gardeners spanning different nationalities, ethnic backgrounds, economic circumstances and political views.
Members will respect these differences, and will try to ensure that the content of their posts does not give offence.
Where differences of opinion do arise, we will try to focus on what we have in common with the other member: a passion for gardening.
I would suggest that, if any member posts a message which, in the view of the current administrators (who seem to be founts of common sense) breaches these principles, they be sent a PM asking them to edit or delete the message in question.
If, after two PMs, they refuse to do so, the administrators could bar them. What do others think? Any suggestions? … cheers …

Good idea CC - I have a couple of my own gripes though I am offended by bad language or should I say having to read bad language - I don't even like to see * or ! or any other symbol used in place of letters either. And as most of you are aware I don't like it when threads go off topic as, IMO it is bad manners

All the facilities you require are on the BBC board.

I have to say, I am offended by bad language, but find that if it is written, either fully or with @?!* , my brain automatically edits it out. Then I can enjoy what is being said. The only time I was not offended was when watching Shirley Valentine, it just sounded so funny and so right.
I have lost count of the number of times I have said I want to see a film and my son says........wait for it to come on tv mum 'cos there's a lot of language in it.

The trouble is you will never be able to please everyone all of the time and it would be impossible to try. Lets just hope amongst us all we have enough common sense not to deliberately set out to upset anyone. A good debate in the right place is brilliant and there are plenty of other boards to do this on. So lets all hope we are all adult enough to draw a line under all of this and carry on as normal - pretty please I totally agree jlottie. We are all adults - with a bit of silliness thrown in at times. As we are airing our honest opinions my suggestion would be that if a post upsets anyone, then alert that member by PM and not make open statements on the board for everyone to read. This in my opinion is what changes or affects the mood of the board for everyone if they were involved in the thread or not. Also if you are posting something with personal sentimental gestures attached then please state that on the original post and hopefully everyone will know where they stand. If you have a personal gripe then sort it out between yourselves - I don't think it will benefit the board to make changes or add rules which will only please a few members as I think the majority of members are happy with things as they are. LLx
