I must admit I`ve flown before but only once ...twice if you count the return flight, but the clock is ticking and my mind is racing, I know its silly and Ive had loads of people quoting odds and saying its safer than crossing the road, but try and convince my body, my hands are shaking and I feel ILL. The plane takes off at 6.50 and at this rate I wont be on it. I need to talk, anybody there?

It's quite normal to be scared. I've only flown a few times - 4 or 5 tops, and I've been scared each time. But I do reason with myself and remind myself 2 things
1. Aircraft cabin crew fly every day with no problems
2. Looking from an airport you can see hundreds of planes taking off all the time with no problems
Then I tell myself that it's alright to be scared, because I am intelligent enough to remember that my fear is irrational and I can rise above it.
So I suggest that you be scared, but be firm with that fear and let it know that you are the boss.
I also take something to take my mind off the flight - a DVD player and a good DVD, or a riviting book.

Thing is Im scared of heights and enclosed spaces... you should have seen me in Wookie Hole, a cave system I was taken to to "cure" me . I see planes as flying caves and it takes a lot of self control to board one, if it wasnt for OH I would never have done it last time! Im not a nutter I wont make a scene or throw a wobbler but Im sure it takes years off my life each time, (silly as it sounds and I know it does) How old were you when you joined the RAF Jlottie, did you hope to be a pilot?

As you know, the pilot flies the plane from the cockpit. If it's a female pilot is it called the fannypit?

Sweetleaf - my husband is a pilot with over 9,000 flying hours. OK he doesn't fly civvi aircraft as he is in the RAF He had made thousands of take-offs and landings with out any problems I worry about him when he drives the car or rides his motor bike but never when he is flying Millions of aircraft civvi and military take off and land everyday all over the world without any problems. Relax you will be fine. I'd rather fly than go by boat any day - I can't swim

I use breathing techniques to control pain, and to deliberately drop my heart rate and blood pressure to fall asleep, a neat rick and easy to do! But for some reason Ive never thought to use it against tension or fear thanks Jlottie Im going to try it !

It's a very short flight - no sooner have you taken off you will be landing again.

You'll have to teach me that trick Takes a long time to get it the first time Sleepy but if you do it once you never forget how... I had two of my children without any analgesia and hardly made a sound, and never have a bad nights sleep.

I expect this is too late for Sweetleaf to read but I am exactly the same as her - terrified of heights, don't like feeling closed in BUT I LOVE flying! Only been in a plane 3 times (not green, too poor anyway!) but I completely loved it and one of them was a tiny little Cessna (?) flying all over Norfolk. Then I went up in a hot air ballon and that was the single most brilliant thing I've ever done. Fear is irrational but the adrenalin rush is great!

I was on in the night, just in time to see sweetleaf log off, so I didn't have time to say anything - was a bit bleary eyed as well.
I adore flying and have flown around most of the world but the one thing that I love is Helicopter flying - my OH arranged it for me a couple of times - fantastic feeling.
Hot air balloon - now that would be marvellous although the older I get the more I am wary of heights.

Oh Sweetleaf I know this is too late and that you'll be in the air by now but my thoughts are with you. I hate flying but won't let it stop me from going places. And I've no reason to be scared either - I've flown through lightning storms (lightning hit one wing) and come through fine, and I've flown on long-haul flights to California and Australia on occasion - still nothing to make me worry, though I still do.
I've been in a tiny twin-prop where OH was in the seat behind and crippled himself to hold my hand through the flight - the lights were turned off and all we could see were the lights of the cockpit. There were no lights below us because we were flying over the Grand Canyon so all we could see were the lights in the front of the plane, and the glow of Las Vegas in the far distance. I could smell the petrol but the experience, when it was over, was so exhilerating.
I've been up in a helicopter and as the 'copter rose up in the air there was a strange squeeking noise - moments later I heard the pilot through my headphones: "Mrs P could you please stop squealing?" (OH nearly wet himself laughing!)
I really hope that now you are feeling relaxed and happy that you are going on your holidays. And when you read this you'll be back wondering why you got so nervous in the first place. <hug>

I can quite understand how sweetleaf was feeling.I've been abroad dozens of times always by coach or ferry. I can't get it out of my head that the plane I get on will crash.

I feel very silly when put it down on paper, but I have driven nearly every day of my life for the last 30ys, and have had 3 crashes(not my fault i might add) I got into my o.h. car and drove to work not long after one crash. It doesn't make sense and I can't explain it, my friends think I'm completely potty
