PRELIMINARY ANNOUNCEMENT: Garden trials for 2007 season
As we enjoy exchanging information on our successes (and failures), we thought it would be fun and informative to run a small series of trials next season, hoping to include as many members as possible. It might even help to better understand the effect of regional and international location on commonly grown plants. All can be grown in pots - and the climbers up drainpipes - if necessary, so it's in no way exclusive, and by growing two of any (or all) there's an element of competition, but only between tomatoes etc, not members...
So, we thought we'd suggest as subjects any or all of the following pairs: two tomato varieties (one plum, one cherry), two runner beans, two French beans, two sunflowers (dwarf and giant), two sweet peas, and two chillies.
Full details will follow in due course. We will nominate the varieties, and will be approaching seed suppliers to see if there's any chance we can get sponsorship in the form of seeds for you, but the basic idea is that having got the specified seeds, each participant will grow in their chosen way and, if possible, keep a form of pictorial diary of progress. We will set up a 'trials' sub board similar to "my garden/allotment" where each gardener will have a picture thread and one for comment. At the end of the season, we'll collate information in an attempt to demonstrate top tips and pitfalls - much can be learned from set-backs as well as from stunning results.
As an indication of interest, members who would like to participate and be notified of the full details, please add your name by way of a post below. You'll see this announcement in several Boards - you only need to respond once!

Sounds great, as a newbie a trial would also help me learn. I do like Tomato's and Chillis so they would be the ones I would go with, depends on the varities though as I have already put my seed order through.

I wouldn't mind trying the sweet peas, I like them and never grown them before. Remind me of my gran's garden years ago when we used to go out picking broad beans. I actually used to like eatin them then too. Ugh.

ROSEFRIEND ;D ;D
I'm not sure if this could be helpful but I work in a nursery and we deal with a certain large commercial seed company. I could get the seeds at cost price if that would be of any help.
