Has anyone got this plant? I bought one yesterday, yes I know I shouldn't impulse buy but it looks so feminine and beautiful. However I'm finding conflicting advice on the beeb it says acidic, sandy soil, in my flower expert book Dr, Hessayon it says any reasonable soil. My soil if anything is on the alkaline side and definitely not sandy. Do I plant it and shame the devil or pot it up? Please someone say they've got it on clay alky soil. Thanks

According to my Reader's Digest Encyclopedia of Garden Plants and Flowers:- Sidaleas prefer fairly cool, moist conditions but may not survive very hard winters.......
CULTIVATION: Plant from autumn to spring in any reasonable fertile soil. Choose a sunny spot, but in hot, dry gardens plant in light shade and apply a mulch of well-rotted compost to help to keep the roots cool and moist. Cut off faded flowering stems to encourage a second flush of blooms. Do not allow plants to set seed as this weakens them. Stake in windy, exposed spots.
PROPAGATION: Divide named cultivars in spring and autumn. Sow seed of species in a coldframe in late winter or early spring. Plant out in early summer in their permanent positions.

Thanks for your replies I'm going to plant it and see, I've even had perlagoniums over winter this year, I'm surprised they never rotted off. Thanks for the info as per the soil, it was mainly that I was worried about.

I have this plant, have had it in another garden too. I have never had any problem with it, despite being in different kinds of soil. I'd stop worrying. If it looks as if it is too dry, give it some water. It is very pretty.
