I have been given a wrought-iron garden gate, its six feet in height and has a curved top. Its very ornate but I have no need of any more gates.......Ideas please of how to recycle this in the garden, there must be something I can do with it. OH is a qualified welder, who worked on some of the REALLY high bits at Birmingham Convention Centre, so its Ideas, not skill which Im short of.......sorry no pic.

Hi Sweetleaf ... we have a small wrought-iron gate which we've leant against a wall, its 'feet' buried slightly for stability, for climbers to grow up. It actually looks quite nice ... cheers ...

Ok, so Ill grow something up it... sweet peas? , nice idea, but seasonal, so it would be "naked" at least six months of the year, thanks anyway, Dr Bill. Canarycreeper, you have a great Idea there. Clematis it is then! Evergreen would be best, over to you again Plocket!

HURRAH!!! You'll need a very sunny spot which is also sheltered if possible, and I guess you'll still want to see some of the gate?
I would suggest something like Early Sensation (7ft), Cartmanii "Joe" (6ft) or Avalanche (9ft): all will flower in April/May time and don't get too big. The cirrhosas are yummy but I would think too big for your gate, and the Armandiis are VAST! Pixie and Moonbeam are very pretty but too small at only around 4ft.
Does that help you? <hug>

The entire rear garden is sheltered as it is sunken, 4 feet lower than surrounding gardens, something to do with living on a hill, the gardens are terraced, Its very sunny and I used to sunbathe, before I filled the garden up too much for that, lol (bad for you anyway, I tell my girls) Clematis Early Sensation looks great BTW, Ill shop around for that! dspace.dial.pipex.com/clematis/page43.htm

PML! That about sums it up Susie!!! I guess I could find something to share a pot with Brunette, and one to share with Petit Faucon, and another to go with Blue Pirouette..... I'm actually trying to be more choosey now though - finding unusual clems if I can. Ooooh HF Young is on his own too - hey Susie thanks - I can get LOADS more clems!!!!!!! ;D

Sweetleaf - can you position it against a wall with a mirror behind it, so it looks like you can go through it into a further garden room? Sort of trompe l'oeil... Might need an iron 'door frame' shape as well, but I don't think that's too complex for your OH! You could still have the clems climbing up it...

Margi, thats a GREAT Idea! I thought about something similar before but got put off, by people saying that birds flew into them, but with the gate in front thats very unlikely, and the clem would look twice the size.....

Just done a search on garden gate and came across this thread.
Would love to know what you did in the end with your the wrought-iron garden gate sweetleaf.
I've got one coming and I have a mirror in the shed too, not full length unfotunately it's about 2' square.
