When you think about it a calendar is an artificial way to look at the seasons, the weather is the only reliable way for nature to order itself, perhaps we ought to think about sowing our seeds earlier this year? right-on, Sweetleaf - the pessimists will worry about "snap-frost" losses, but it's only at the cost of a few seeds... it's an exaggerated form of successive sowing if it works. I can't sow mine before mid march so the weather doesn't matter to me yet lol I'm still waiting for a decent frost to kill off some plants that I don't need but don't want to kill myself... lol
Just re read that and I don't mean I want to kill myself, I meant I don't want to kill the plants myself...

Aprilaydee, this concept is hard to get my head around .....Plants you dont need?..... kill plants.?....... Hmmm you cant actually mean that, there must be some inner hidden meaning I have not yet grasped....... Why not just put them in another pot, bet you`ve got a spare one or 10 knocking around I went out this morning and bought a glass greenhouse! Its second-hand, and will have to be dismantled and re-erected but it comes with all the staging, which was made by the owner to fit and its brilliant! Im soo impressed with his DIY .....and my bargain! Oh forgot to say, its 8x10........ Happy little sweetleaf. ;D

No I don't want to kill them but they're looking really really bad and I'm getting whinged at for keeping them lol
I've been out in the garden for the past two hours, came in cos it started to rain a little (and it made me need a wee....tmi?). Forked all the lawn to try and get it to drain better as it's been incredibly waterlogged. Picked up a load of dead stuff and stuff that has been blown about in the wind and wondered why there was glass all over the veggie patch and decking. Realised one of the large panes of glass in the roof of the other greenhouse was missing. Moved some geraniums in pots, watered my plants in the GH, swept up (which was pointless cos the wind blew it all back again so I gave up).
I've got 2 roses still with flowers on, a Magnolia Susan with lots of blooms and buds, new growth starting on loads of plants, 2 upright and 1 trailing geranium still in flower and the rest with leaves on (hence why I don't want to kill them cos I'm convinced they'll come back next year so I've hidden them down the bottom of the garden so boyf won't whinge at me so much), a blackberry bush (I think) in blossom and a tree in blossom. One of my lavenders has finally decided to give flowering a rest now with the last blooms dying off. A couple of the orange autumn/spring flowering pansies are turning purple....
And for this afternoon I'm off to the pets at home place, McDonalds ;D, local GC (might see about popping/dragging OH to Bodnant Gardens shop as they sell T&M seeds so I can get the varieties for the trials even though I'll be starting late. Might also pop into estate agents...
I'm a busy bunny today!!

Fab news about the GH sweetleaf I'm so pleased for you, it sounds just the job. Watch out when handling the glass it's sooooo heavy, make sure you have gloves on too with a good grip. Hark at me as if you don't know that. Found glass at the side of the GH this morning , just one piece blown out and it's got one corner broken off so have just put the main piece back in with extra clips. The missing corner is covered by polystyrene on the inside so I'm not to worried. I'm like you aprilaydee, find it hard to throw away anything, it has to die of its own accord then it's binned . I'm getting better though, particularly now I'm starting to be a bit more organised with the GH, Poly Kennel and my potting area. Must say I've had a fab few hours this morning, split up a big clump of Crocosmia I dug up a while back, gave some to my neighbour, put a few stones round the edge of the bed near the veg bit. Took a big arm full of branches up to the bonfire, as soon as this wind drops I'm going to have to have a good burning session (love it love it love it a bonfire whoooo hoooo).

I am envious of you lot being able to burn your garden rubbish.
Like so many things in Germany that is also forbidden, just like mowing your lawn on a Sunday, washing your car in the street, using any tools in the garden that make a racket like drills, chainsaws etc.....the list is endless.

YIPPEEEE !!!!!!Sweetleaf - Thats great news i'm really pleased for you. 8 x 10 is a good size to. - Have you got room for it without loosing too many plants in the garden. HAPPY greenhousing. He's cut about 2 thirds down now. - The tree must be about 40ft high and he is cutting it all down by hand. - eeeck.!!! Will take some more in a minute. - so if I dissapear you know why.

Oooooooh I'm soooooo glad I started this GARDEN CHAT THREAD. I'm really enjoying it, it's great to just pop on and have a garden chin wag ;D. My intitial fear was that some specialist chat may get lost in here but I think as we use it more we'll get the hang of what does need to be started on a new thread in here Gardening Chat or one of the other areas in Gardens and PlantsVegetable and Fruit Growing Ponds and water features Beds and Borders Greenhouse ChatHappy gardening everyone

Oh my - a tree down and a veg patch being developed? That's wonderful Alicat!!! We've spent the afternoon in the garden sieving compost. OH didn't enjoy the task and split my plastic sieve, so he's just ordered me a Rota Sieve - so I'm excited too!!! Anyway lots of compost has been spread about the garden by LP and I have carefully topped up lots of pots, AND we have a small dustbin practically full of scrummy sieved compost ready for use! I feel very satisfied

OH has put some guttering up under the front of the dog and Poly kennel today so I have placed a big BLUE drum under it in the corner of the kennel run area to collect the rain in (hope my dog don't mind ;D. I can see this BLUE drum from the house and it stands out like a spare doodab. I thought about trellis around it but then I'd want to grow something up it and can't really scrounge anymore of the run space. Has anyone every painted a plastic drum ? if so how succesful is it and what did you use.

Hi Chuckles I have a blue water butt too. I haven't painted it but I know you can get spray paint for plastic from most DIY stores called Plasti-cote or something like that. - I'm petty sure it is for outdoor use. - Lots of different colours and effects too. ;D Btw. The tree is now down or should I say the top 2 thirds are down. Just left with the trunk and roots. - My garden now looks a right mess, full of tree branches. - the kids are having great fun - their imagination is running wild. Plocket,Sweetleaf thats great new's that your coming to BG. - I still don't know if my OH and Kids are coming. - they can't decide.

Thanks for the suggestions I do like those bins sweetleaf, can't believe the varieties there are to choose from. My only problem is the water butt is going to be against plain wood and concrete and think it would stand out almost as much as the blue. I'm going to use your idea of PVA 1st though, then try the spray paint alicat suggested, have a feeling I've seen that in Wilco's

There's something very satisfying about chopping down an ugly tree. We chopped down over 100 leylandii at M&Ds over a long period of time and it was fab, especially when dad invested in a decent chainsaw. Luckily they have a huge area where the trees could be chopped up and then we'd have bonfires every now and then. Plus a local farmer took many of the logs to fill a site of his.
Can't wait to see the piccies Alicat!
