Did you get your wood Sweetleaf??! I went down there this morning and the bloomin skip was gone! I may have to take PG`s advice to plocket, and get in touch with a local scaffolding company to buy some of their old ones Its so much more fun scavenging than buying dont you agree?

Oh that's a bit of a butter Sweetleaf. I hope you manage to find something else suitable. Perhaps you should start scouring the neighbourhood. How about hanging around at your local tip??? ;D

Ok P, get your foot out of your mouth! I think I know you didnt mean it that way....our local tip is in an area I dont visit.....a bit rough, not on the cards, instead Ill do as Piggin suggested and ring around local scaffolding companies for my scaff boards, Ill get `em before I really need `em dont worry!

I was kidding really Sweetleaf. I think if you do a bit of phoning around and sweet-talking you'll get hold of some old scaffolding. Good luck!

I take my hat off to you really Sweetleaf - I just love the idea of an allotment, but not all the hard work one entails! ;D

You arent wrong really the idea of an allotment is much more attractive on a wet day than an actual allotment although if the family is squabbling I would rather be up there than here flask in hand watching the rain barrels fill up.

I guess they aren't exactly cheap to start off with either. I've got the tools I need for my little garden but I could probably do with a better spade and fork. Then there's setting up a water butt, getting a wheelbarrow (so I can move stuff from the house to the lottie), building a coldframe or something to start plants off (can't afford a greenhouse!). Building a composter..... As I think I've said before, I really wouldn't know where to start!
Hey now I've had a thought - perhaps I should start an allotment and write a book about it at the same time!!!

Go and put your name down for one Plocket - you know you want to! I would expect that none of us had any of the right 'stuff' when we started - it sort of accumulates as you go and you can make your plot ' your own' it doesn't have to be row upon row of veggies - you could have a nursery bed for plants/ clems, LP could have her own section, you can have a little wildlife pond and a nettle patch. I don't have a greenhouse up ( the plastic one is still not put together yet) or a cold frame on the plot. I managed to grow lots last year without that. I picked up second hand compost bins from the local tip, lots of plots on my site just have compost heaps and people give you all sorts of stuff. It really is something you do a bit at a time - and it's very rewarding when each bit falls into place. LLx

Of course I want to! I'm just lazy!!!!!
Now you are talking about clems though - I've got some Integrifolia seeds from the Clematis Society!! I just loathe the idea of a huge weed-ridden patch that I can't start planting things on straight away. See - I'm lazy!!!

Oh and a word of warning Plocket - if you do get a lottie you will never be able to walk/drive past a skip without having a good look to see if there is anything useful to use on the lottie! LLx

My Grandad had a lottie, but his garden backed onto the allotments! I remember as a child watching him dig up enormous cabbages and red potatoes then taking them into Nan who cooked them for our dinner...slurp. OH and I have talked about getting a lottie but have decided not to bother until we've got the garden right...the nearest ones are a fair walk away and we don't have a car at the mo.
I just sorted through my seed tin...put opened packets into little money envelopes I got today from Wilkinsons...all neatly labelled. These then went into a tin along with some silica gel packets and are now in the salad draw of the fridge ;D I'm so excited....want to start NOW. But shall restrain myself...I don't think that I'll be able to stick to the restricted pallette as planned (orange and purple)....got too many beauties that I just HAVE to grow and cram into the garden...oOoOoOooOoOooOoO
;D

The money packets are a good idea CPB.
I save all those envelopes you get in junk mail and use them for seed packets. Not that I'm tight in any way you understand........ ;D
