I'm just about to dig the dandelions from the lawn with my great grandfathers daisy grubber, even the handle is origional, not the tape keeping it on though, and his small sharp spade is the best one ever for digging planting holes, everything florished in those holeS. Has any one else inherited a favourite tool?

I have my Grandfather's gardening tools like a garden rake, a spade, hand saw, daisy grubber, a thingy to plant bulbs. The smaller tools are in a wooden carrier that looks like it was made to hold the smaller hand tools.

I don't know who had my grandpa's garden tools, or my grandmother's for that matter - I wish it had been me though! We've got some of my father-in-law's DIY tools though - many of which he made himself.

I've had my trusty old spade and fork since I was fifteen years old, that's a lorra lorra years and a lorra lorra digging! They were made my craftsmen to a standard that I doubt could be bought today. Both were made by Elwell. *Note how the spade is now a little shorter than the fork (they were originally the same) and worn on one side. Oh! and also that they are always kept clean & oiled.

I just bought my first full size spade and fork. Only B&Q value ones but they're in a set and cost £5.27 so with my discount they were about £2 each. I'm not expecting them to last the rest of my life but for that price I don't mind!!

I have a very old daisy grubber too - I'm not sure how old though. It's an excellent tool - good for removing dandelions from the lawn too.

I'm not expecting them to last the rest of my life but for that price I don't mind!! It depends on what you use them for and what your soil is like. If you have great soil and don't need to dig holes for ponds etc. they could last a lifetime. Oh, and still look after them! I have a stainless steel one which is great to use, but for less hard work my Dad's old spade comes out. He had umpteen as he was a professional gardener, so I had my pick when he retired. It has a tread on it, not seen in too many new ones nowadays, even though they are creeping back in. I used it to good effect, when I dug our pond out. No not the digging of the pond, but shovelling the soil into the skip, after the pond was dug. It is a great piece of kit. I tried it with the pond digging, but I think the builders dropped some cement dust, where i built the pond, so it was the new one and mattock that had to be used. Pity! Also yesterday I saw a professional(!!) trim a neighbours hedge with the latest gizmo. I am sure I could have done a better job (and quicker) with my old hedge clippers again passed down to me from my Dad. I also have one of my Dad's hoes, which I prefer using to the ones I have from Wolf. Surprising that, I can't believe I am saying that. They don't make them like they used to, well not really! It still pleases my Dad to hear I am still using them! Keith
