Does it really work David K? I always seem to hole the best spud when digging. I cleared my early crop yesterday to make room for some other plants, it made me quite cross how many I speared! I've seen them for sale but never quite believed they work, I may invest in one if you recommend it.

Hi 4p! If I were to be totally honest with you I would have to admit that it it doesn't totally eliminate the problem of spiking, although it really helps to avoid damaged spuds. To be honest I find it more useful as a digging tool; the soil doesn't tend to fall through the tines as it does with ordinary forks. As you say (sod's law) it's always the biggest that gets spiked, just as Mr slug prefers to ruin the best of the crop.

I've always thought that it was useful because the spuds don't fall through so much while you're lifting 'em... don't think it can stop the spiking.
Acle Market (Thursdays) is good for old tools cheap!

Hi Oldmoleskins! Sorry to be off topic (it happens) I just wanted to say that I have some very happy memories of Acle. When I was a teenager (18) a pal and myself enjoyed a fabulous two week holiday on the Norfolk Broads. We landlubbers collected our boat at a place called Stalam (spl) and stayed overnight at Acle, where I fell madly in love with a local girl. I suspect the Broads were much quieter in those days.

Sorry David, somehow overlooked the bookmarking and only just happened on your reply. "Acle Cut" is much the same I would guess, but you were probably at Acle Bridge, where there's a pub and a small thatched cafe plus a couple of boatyards. All very busy during school holidays, but still a marvellous semi wild place for much of the year. Those Acle girls... they're still waiting for you...happy days, no doubt... OM
