I've only recently had need to buy a pair of those hinged "post-hole" digging shovels (about 30 quid at B&Q - good strong kit) and have found them perfect for any hole digging - bulb planting, making holes for trees/shrubs, in fact anything in a pot of any size (well 1 litre upwards) you want to plant out.
You don't have to bend, the hole is easily rounded to any depth, you can place the surplus in a barrow as you go, all in all a very useful addition to the armoury... Of course, it's still a hands and knees job planting the thing, but it is always the digging that's the bugger, I've found - and these make it easy...

OH has one of those contraption too OM, he calls it a double digger. It's a very useful piece of kit and makes really easy work of post holes. Never thought about using it for planting will have to make sure that it lives in my shed and not his works shed ;D

Blimey, that's a 'blast from the past', Chuckles - I see it goes back to early October!
Of course, if you believe that Joe whassisname from Gardener's World, just last Friday he was saying that we should be planting in square holes...
So, you just be careful how you use them.

Well now I know what it is called - a Hole Auger. When we had new fencing last year we borrowed one from the neighbour - absolutely marvellous.
We have trees everywhere and trying to dig between Oak tree roots can be a devil - easy with a Hole Auger. It certainly saved a lot of sweat and swearing.......
