Found this site by accident earlier in the year and found that by using aspirin germination of seeds did seem to be better. Has anyone else tried this. www.plantea.com/plant-aspirin.htm

That is quite interesting, but please be aware if you have cats who like mine chew on leaves or lap at pools of water or drink from the watering can Asprin if highly toxic to cats and just a tiny amount can be fatal.

Or children under 16 (it always used to be 12) due to the increased risk of Reye's Syndrome - makes the brain swell and causes liver failure. Not gardening I know but not everybody knows and some parents still give it to their kids. However, I'm sure gonna try it on my plants and they are certainly under 16. Nice one Jlottie.

That made interesting reading! I am allergic to aspirin and come out in great big weals!
What interests me is that if plants produce salicylic acid naturally why am I not allergic to them
( the plants, that is)
I don't think I am going to try out the suggestions in the article - just in case!

It seems very odd to me but it obviously does do something. I think I'll wait a few decades before I try it, I don't like spraying anything on my babies! And I do have 3 cats, so better safe than sorry.

Aspirin in cut flowers I`d heard of, but its very interesting to hear why it works.I have 3 cats so I dont think I`ll be trying it though. Aspirin is a very useful drug, in moderation, in humans, but I never used it on children as the risks are too high.

Having 3 cats my self, that got me worried but after a bit of googling found this answer by a vet
"Thank you for being concerned enough to write to us about the dosage for aspirin.
There are published studies indicating that aspirin is safe when dosed from 10 to 25mg/kg every 48 to 72 hours and one study indicating no problems when it was dosed at 162mg/cat once a week. We use up to 10mg/lb in our practice, even though it is at the higher end of the dosage scale. We usually do not exceed 81mg per cat and I probably should indicate that in our answers online, since this is often closer to 5mg/kg in large cats.
Mike Richards, DVM 10/15/2001 "
So I don't think that 1 1/2 aspirin in 2 gallons of water every 2 to 3 weeks would be a problem. I have only used it in the Poly Tunnel to get seeds and seedlings off to a good start and it really does seem to work.

Aspirin can be given to cats in the doses indicated above. They lack an enzyme in their liver which humans and canines do have thereby aspirin in a cat needs to take the "scenic route" before being broken down and eliminated from the body. The blood concentrations stay high far longer in cats than humans or dogs.
It does not taste very good and it is unlikely a cat would lap it up. To be on the safe side its probably best to decrease their risk of exposure to the aspirin.
