I've been told that growing lavender amongst roses will protect them from blackspot Is it true? I think I might give it a try, but surely a miniature variety of lavender would be best - I have about 50 plus hidcote in my front garden (our house is called Lavender Cottage!!) which is surely too big to grow in my rose bed

Hi Rita
I have never heard that Lavender will stop Blackspot - it is supposed to stop Greenfly though.
It also depends on what kind of roses you have but with large Bush etc I think Hidcote looks marvellous.
One thing though - if it is a "greenfly" year then Lavender will also get them although it will be one of the last plants that do.

Plant chives? They are reputed to stop black spot. I dunno if it's true but maybe if you planted garlic chives, their white flowers might look better under roses, then it would be a double whammy - garlic and onion.

I've asked for a book on companion planting for my birthday - which isn't far off - I will let you know if blackspot is listed in it If not then I might try some chives
