Planning ahead for next year I really like the idea of just Purple, Orange and White. So far I've planted some purple tulip bulbs and bought purple Cornflower and Nigella seeds
Any other suggestions for annuals, perennials or shrubs [toying with the idea of an orange potentilla bush] gratefully read and considered

Hi WelshBlue, Not sure if you'll like any of these. I went on a shopping trip yesterday and bought Echinacea White Swan and Verbena Boneriensis(not sure on spelling) and a shrub Perovskia Blue Spire, I also have a purple Catananche bought a few weeks ago too. There are loads you could choose from and I suppose it depend on what sort of things you like and can grow in your gdn. Other purchases yesterday were, Buddleja Royal Red, Heuchera Ring of Fire, Lythrum salicaria Robert, Ajuga, Delpiniums, Aster Lady in Black, Everlasting Sweat Pea White Pearl and a Clematis Wyevale. Think I went a little mad , won't be allowed out again for a while ;D ;D

Poppy, I don't want to teach you to suck eggs or anything, but if you upload your pictures in photobucket and choose option 3 which is the IMG option and paste it on the message whilst writing it then your photo will go straight on to message saving the need to go to another link, fair enough if it's an entire album that you want displayed. try it, very easy to do. Thanks for advice CB, there were 6 pics in the album so thought best do it that way, I know people get a bit if they have loads of individual images to open. Did you notice it was a Yahoo Album, have posted a note on the Photo Thread you started that Yahoo now seems to work. I'm so glad because that's the one I use.

Thx poppy, jlottie and mrskp. Some nice plants to be considering and amazingly I know what most of them look like ;D Next question ? I've got a small border measuring 4ft x 3ft which is 'Home' to my Ceanothus. Which is underplanted with Ajuga at it's base and next to that I've transplanted some Pulmonaria and some Veronica 'heavenly blue' next to that. Any ideas for a suitable bulb with white flowers that will 'float' over the sea of blue?

Morning WB - still on purple - what about Cotinus coggryia purpurea (purple smoke tree)? Absolutely beautiful leaf shape and fantastic if you can place it where the sun shines through it. You could underplant with orange and white tulips for a snazzy Spring display underplanted with grape hyacinths? Or bright orange Fritillaria imperialis? You can't miss them! For your white bulbs, maybe some really bright white Narcissus? Look forward to piccies next Spring.

Again some great ideas - Cotinus coggryia purpurea (purple smoke tree) is number one on the list. I bought some Calendula Officinalis and Aubretia Cascade seeds today.
Tonight I dug up 5 yellow Geum and 2 pink penstemons and moved a Heuchera 'Purple Palace' so I've got to go for it now ... <I hope I'm doing the right thing smiley lol>
[Ps ... I think I'm the only Welshman who doesn't like daffs!]

Hi Welshblue
The best orange flower, never mind the best orange annual, as far as I'm concerned is Eschscholzia - californian poppies. They just scream sunshine to me, but do get the bog-standard orange ones rather than the frilly multicoloured ones!

Hlo Welshblue Dearie. I too want to restrict the colour scheme of my bedding next year (in theory...I just KNOW I'll end up sowing far too much again) Anyroad up...my suggestion might be a bit boring for you, next year I plan to have a swathe of heliotrope (cherry pie)...grew them for the first time this year after getting the idea on the beeb MB! they're sooo fragrant and lovely......planting them up with masses of (gulp) marigolds...got 4 different varieties of French ones, a bog basic 'pot' marigold (my personal favourite) and a few tall African ones. They're all annuals I know but they give good value for money (if the slugs and snails don't get them first)...might have to end up doing a couple of big tubs instead..plenty of time to plan.... CPBx

Hiya WelshBlue Canna Durban has exotic purple foliage with orange veins and flowers. I love Meconopsis cambrica - the Welsh poppy. If you look for a pic, you'll probably find a yellow one but round by yer it do come orange (I'm from Ponty, I'm allowed!) It grows almost as a weed here but you have to encourage it in. It'll set seed and stay if it likes you and if it does, it's a hardy perennial that's tough as old boots. I accidentally watered mine with weedkiller, rinsed it down thoroughly and it's fine now, though it looked a bit sick for a while. In my last garden, I had it mixed in with nigella and it looked the business.

Orange - Papaver atlanticum semi plenna - double orange flowers from April to September if they are kept deadheaded, perennial too.
White - Galtonia candicans, I just love them.

And dee ... you're signature is scary. I've just clicked on it accidentally. And been transported to a world of Avatars. Again. <got to stop holding the mouse as I read smiley>

To add to your purple and orange list have a look at salvia 'Caradonna' it's much darker than Mainacht and flowers for a very long time. Also you might find a dark hellebore for the late winter/early spring season. Papaver rupifragum is a lovely orange poppy which seeds about a bit but is easily controlled and achillea Walther Funcke flowers well into October (not rampant). I can only think of species gladioli or white phlox to go with the ceanothus. I wasn't sure if you wanted the white at the same time as the blue (Chelsea colours?) or whether you wanted the white to follow on.

Hiya dee - you're posts have always been visible on my pc. Gin? Eeeew I haven't been able to touch that stuff since I was 17 ... Hi shadylady - yep you presumed right that I wanted the white to bloom with the blue [sad I know] ... although we lost to Middlesboro tonight, so maybe black is more in keeping <bangingmyheadagainstthewallsmiley>
Again, many thx to everyone for some great suggestions. Not that my wife agrees. She got a bit upset last night when I was sat up in bed with an illustrated plant book and a pen n paper. Hmmmm gardening or divorce ...
