Advice, please
Has anyone had any success with terracotta strawberry planters?
I have tried for three years running, using water retaining gel in the compost, and repotting each year after overwintering in an unheated outhouse.
Each time, the crop has been pathetic compared to those in a raised bed nearby.
What am I doing wrong?
Would I be better using the planter for herbs instead?
Thank you

I lost my terracota one to frost this year. However, I agree that they never produced anything like the crop you get in an open bed. My ceramic version is used as a herb pot and although it gets watered and fed regularly it is still nowhere near as prolific as the same herbs in the ground.
Next year it will be used for flowers!!!

hi, I appreciate this planter is probably part ornamental and meant to be seen - but if it really isn't living up to expectations, why not keep it in the greenhouse next year and see if light/temperature has anything to do with it?
I'm thinking of the strawberry farms in Guernsey where they grow them very successfuly - but under glass - in lengths of gutter racked against the wall, or "punchbag" growbags hung from the ceiling. Simple, but very effective!
Keep it on the bench and in the sun - but well watered, of course.
