I have weeds coming through and want to get rid of them without killing my other plants, is there a weedkiller that won't damage other plants. I know that the water from boiling eggs kills weeds but I would need to boil a hell of a lot of eggs. Can anyone help.

Don't know what's in the egg water but it gets down in to the roots and kills them as well, as for storing it I don't know but could try and find out for you.

Hi all, Vinegar is one of the best weed killers of all time - better than weed killer actually as it does kill the roots - especially if it is used hot and strong - it just burns everything and anything ;D Be careful that plants that you want to keep arn't in the way and use when the soil is moist so that it doesn't pearl off. My neighbour (it wasn't me - honest) was rather fed up of our joint neighbour who has the biggest garden of us all and doesn't do a thing- As we are surround by trees, - birches, massive oaks etc there are also a lot of seedlings as in 6 to 7 feet high - well she has managed to kill them without anyone being the wiser. She also managed to supress his ground elder would you believe. I did give her the tip though - how did I know what she would do Rosefriend

I've got one of those flamethrower weedkillers - a nicely balanced bit of kit with a blowlamp-type of gas cylinder attached. Cost about 16quid but will last (just gas to buy), very direct and effective on small path weeds - but not much else. You don't try to burn them to a crisp, just 'surperheat' them so they can't transpire. They shrivel up and blow away a few days later. I find it quite theraputic wandering along giving 'em a roasting.
It's also very effective as a bbq 'livener' if things are slow!!

What sort of weeds do they do for OM? I've been thinking about getting one as I'm losing the battle with the nettles, docks and mallow? Would they kill them? They are taking over in my wild flowery bits and the balance is going haywire so I've got to try and weaken their hold a bit.

AAAAURGH....isn't it enough that you have an industrial-strength (W.O.M.D.) strimmer??? 4P...WITH A FLAMETHROWER?...have you got a teflon apron? (with your little plimsoles peeking out at the bottom)) and one of those welder's helmets? big leather gauntlets 5x too big? Health & Safety you know old bean...

But CPB, I can wear my Stormtrooper (XXL) outfit - clear the weeds with a mighty flame and set fire to a few capybara. Wow, can I have my strimmer in the other hand? No one can with stand me....for I am the God of Hellfire....coo. And, obviously, I shall be wearing my teflon pants.

4P, the flamethrower seems to efficiently deal with small emerging weeds/grass tufts in my gravel paths - it certainly saves a lot of bending. It's very direct and could probably be used among plants and lawns if you were very careful - tho' I haven't used it in that situation.
Treat yourself to one. I potter about with a drink in one hand, killer stick in the other and just drift away...

Hi CB - vinegar is meant to be another good one CB - do you put vinegar in the water when boiling eggs?

Just found this. Do you spray the vinegar on the weeds, paint it on or what? If it works on tree seedlings might it work on the shoots growing from an old oak stump? I have one in my hedge that has obviously survived several attempts to kill it off and the shoots are very vigorous. This wouldn't be a problem if they were healthy, but they get dreadful mildew and it looks terrible.

I think you need to get out more, Sleepy!! I'm seriously considering wearing this stunning outfit to Cheerypeabrain's Fancy Dress 50th party! All the other guests will be swanning about in the glittery T Rex gear, CPB will be stuck together with black plastic and safety pins (punk - if you're wondering...) but I'm a tad concerned about drinking quantities of scrumpy cider and wearing teflon pants. Being vertically challenged, I usually sit in a corner at parties but if I can find some high heeled wellies I'll be able to chat with other guests at their level. The alternative is to select some of my glorious selection of disgusting gardening clothes with a T Shirt saying "Barbera Good ate all the pies"....

You are right about needing to get out more.
Should my invitation come through I will bring a box for you to stand on. With wheels so we can dance.

Arrgh, but how can you tell, Plocket? They might be like Daleks - masculine, terrifying but in fact , inside is a miserable little pink thing (bit like your average man - ONLY JOKING!)......actually, cut the legs off at the knees, masking tape to hold it altogether round the middle and put the mask on - fits like a glove (one of those really s-t-r-e-t-c-h-y ones for kids...). Very useful for nettle bashing too.
PS Exactly how strong is this box SS?
