Well.....I have one of those. I believe if you prune it hard back in Spring and late Summer that the new growth is red. I have decided that now is a bit late to prune mine although it is getting dark green now. I live in a very windy and exposed area which is why I am not cutting it back again, but it would make the lovely new red growth if I did. I am sure there are people who can tell you more, and maybe they will tell me that I can still prune mine. I keep walking past it and wondering, because they really don't look all that inspiring as green specimens do they.

I tend to prune mine whenever the leaves are green because it is just the young foliage that has the lovely red tinge to it. However I don't think I would do it at this time of year because I don't think it would produce more new shoots. Providing it is not going to look awful if you cut it back now & it does not shoot you could give it a go. If you do, give it a good feed & water to encourage new growth. Mine is green by the way.

Thank you. I have mine in a pretty exposed spot and I don't have a lot of luck with pruning anyway, so will wait until the Spring.

sorry for delay in replying.........I have been 'helping' my son and his family to move house. Thanks for all the advice, since I am in 'the frozen north' I will wait til spring. I do get carried away with secateurs and loppers!!
