I,ve just had a phone call from a mobile phone company, where some guy in sweden has tried to buy mobile phones on my credit card £690 worth, fortunately the bank refused payment, but i can only think somone has got my CC number from an online transaction, because that the only time I ever use a CC all other local shopping is done with a debit card. Strangely enough last month someone tried to spend £800 on my daughters card, both with HSBC.
Be careful,check your statements regularly.

I had a call about some "unusual activity" on my wife's credit card the other day. Apparently she hadn't used it for nearly a week ;D Seriously, I know 2 people who've had this happen to them so thanks for the warning Netherfield. FA x

Another thing that as just struck me is that the man who called from the phone company asked for me by my nickname, which is what everyone calls me but is not my given name, which makes me more certain that his as happened on the internet because my nickname is part of my email address, unfortunately I have had half an hour speaking to a gentleman in a foreign country who although speaks english was not easy to understand,,don't get me wrong i'm not being prejudiced but i do think the call centres should be kept in this country.

Netherfield - I've just posted this on the BBC but I think it's worth putting here too - really hope I'm wrong but please check with your bank asap.
Netherfield - just checking - I hope the person who rang you didn't ask for your credit card number for confirmation or anything? - or that if they did you didn't give it to them? Only I'm afraid the phone call itself sounds like a scam to me - if someone was using your card they probably wouldn't be giving out your phone number & the bank shouldn't be, so the person who said they were from a mobile phone company shouldn't know who to call. If I were you I'd get in touch with your bank & check the facts & if nec. ask them to cancel the card.
It's actually extremely difficult for anyone to get your cc number from online transactions, assuming the site you buy from is secure & assuming it's a real site - not one set up by a phishing company. (R is an internet security expert so this is somthing I know about). Using a cc to buy by phone or giving details to anyone ringing/emailing purporting to be from your bank etc is more likely to result in things like this happening.

Couldn't agree more netherfield, i prefer speaking to someone in this country, i always have to repeat myself at least 4 times before I'm understood. Be careful my oh had an email for someone called heather to do with his credit card saying his info was wrong. He deleted it after showing me that it had an attachment, as i said you have to be so careful.

The guy in the other country was from the bank who confirmed that someone had tried to use my card, but they stopped it as an irregular spending pattern. The first man who rang gave me their website and telephone number for me to check that they were kosher.
