Our builders have arrived and started putting scaffolding around the house prior to replacing the roof. But they have also dumped planks and girders in the flower beds – simply thrown them there, in the process squashing several plants and ripping a climber from the wall . Sorry, I just had to moan to someone - I can't believe that they threw this stuff on the borders when there is a whole patio available. ... cheers ...

I would have a word with them, if I were you tell them that what they have done is tantamount to damage to property... vandalism and that if there is any further damage you will seek compensation from their insurers. You dont have to do anything of the sort, of course but it works 9 times out of 10, and theyll be more careful.

I did remonstrate with them, but cautiously because builders are like hen's teeth in Ireland at the moment. They've disappeared now and I've examined the damage. A Salvia genii and Chrysanthemum pacificum have been trampled on but will hopefully recover; probably the best thing to do is cut them to the ground; a dahlia has had all its shoots broken off (so I guess I may as well give it its winter mulch now). Rather than re-attaching my solanum back to the wall where it will be vulnerable, I've laid it on the ground behind other plants. Sorry, I know this sounds like an impotent moan, but it's so frustrating after all the work I've put into the garden this year ... cheers ...

Sorry for all your problems CC, builders never look, or if they do they never think!
Mind you, I thought I was going to read a message about Ruth Archer ;D ;D ;D

Thanks, it actually did help to moan!! Anyway, it's now after midday and there's no sign of them, they've gone AWOL and can't be reached on the mobile. I'm starting to wonder whether we should have just lived another winter with a leaky roof ... cheers ...

Its not usually the same guys who put up the scaffolding, who do the actual roof, CC, maybe you are now waiting for roofers to finish their butties at the cafe...whats the weather like? They wont work in the rain.............

No, actually it is the same guys ... a small firm who did (admittedly excellent) work for us last year. And Dublin is basking in brilliant sunshine ... oh dear, I sound like the kind of people I really loathe ... cheers ...

They came. They plonked down the slates. They left . But they promise faithfully that I'll have my raised bed on Friday ;D ;D ;D.

Moan resumption (this is purely catharsis, I can either type out the moan or be extremely short-tempered with my nearest and dearest). It is drizzling, so no sign of the builders today . Mobile phones not answering . Meanwhile, the scaffolding and a huge pile of slates is blocking my route into the garden so I can't get in to rectify any of the second round of damage (from what I can see from an upstairs window, I think my canna has been uprooted). Ah well, I'll just keep focussing on the raised bed ... one day ...

B****y builders. B****y non gardening builders. B****y weather. GRRRRRR! Can you go and beat up a granny or something (mind you, they're younger and tougher these days - p'raps not)?? Look at it as a chance to make a new garden........soon.

Thanks, 4P - that made me laugh and feel better. Actually, you're right about non-gardening builders. This is the same guy who, last, after he took up the asphalt (for which he kindly didn't charge us), suggested replacing said asphalt with "a nice piece of decking Missus" . gggrrr is right! ... cheers ...

I did remonstrate with them, but cautiously because builders are like hen's teeth in Ireland at the moment. I can understand that, most of them are over here working for the McAlpine family and their relations.

Definitely not - I'm a Granny too! More of a fantasy Monty Python Granny in my head actually...maybe a bash a rat with a blunt instrument would do the trick. (I'm too wimpy to do that even though - bit worried about the revenge of the zombie capybara....). Whatever CC decides to fantasy bash I'm sure it'll get rid of all that stress about her b****y builders! I have this fine movie in my head now of CC chasing a strange mix of a rat, a builder and a granny - she's whacking it with a baseball bat and wreaking havoc in her remaining cannas! OMG she's reduced her garden to pulp and the b***y grannyratbuilder is fighting back....quick CC use my flamethrower.......! ...........aaargh, it's horrible.......
(Blimey, don't mess with Canarycreeper - she can be SAVAGE!)

TeeHee ;D I'm now picturing Sean the builder - a very nice looking lad - in a mob cap, sporting a fetching rat's tail and wielding a walking stick! Thanks all, you've cheered me up no end! Larkshall, all McAlpine's Fusiliers came back to Ireland around five years ago and are now earning a fortune building dog boxes for the Celtic Tiger's cubs in the a*s*h&l" of nowhere - much too busy to be repairing roofs, hence the hen's teeth. The real work is done by Polish and Latvian lads. Anyway, they won't be back until Tuesday so I've used a tried-and-tested stress remedy - much better than bashing grannies: grinding coriander seeds in a mortar and pestle. Works every time! Cheers ....

Ggggrrrh! I think I'm going to set 4Ps rats on the builders - they haven't shown since last Wednesday, and I finally got your man on the mobile just now: they won't be back until next Monday (!). Meanwhile, it's set to get really cold tonight and major gymnastics (and a thinner build than mine) are required to get through the scaffolding into the garden to put mulch down on some tender plants. Ggggrh and double-gggrrh ....

No, Stezario <teeth gnashing, face empurpled smiley>, they have not come back. And since it's going to be raining on an off for the rest of the week, I doubt we'll see them. Oh, how I wish I'd studied something practical like roofing and brick-laying ... cheers ...

Sorry, but I need to have a virtual cry. They've arrived and started stripping the old roof by the simple expendient of chucking slates down where they may fall - in this case, on the lettuce patch, cold frame and a lavender I've grown from cutting. After I went fairly ballistic, they are now confining the slate-throwing to the patio - but that's the end of our lettuce ... right, sob session over ... cheers ...

My heart goes out to you. Why on earth aren't they using a rubbish chute and skip?
Make an inventory af everything they have damaged and deduct it from their bill and then add some for the heartache and inconvenience they have caused!

CC My heart goes out to you. Why on earth aren't they using a rubbish chute and skip? Make an inventory af everything they have damaged and deduct it from their bill and then add some for the heartache and inconvenience they have caused! PG Totally agree here. They would expect workers to RESPECT their properties, wouldn't they? It is that word again, that I keep coming up with nowadays, RESPECT. It seems to have been forgotton about. Can you make the point that you will be taking note of damages made? Might make them think again. Keith

You have all made me feel a lot better, thank you! ;D It's great to have understanding 'virtual' friends to sound off to. My partner had a very severe word with them a short time ago, and matters seem to have miraculously improved, the slates all now being picked up and stacked ... it would have been nice, however, if they had reacted so promptly to the female of the species (me). Thanks again, you're a great bunch ... cheers ...

Some builders are the pits when it comes to gardens! Though I'm tempted to ask - did you go to see other work you roofers have done before? Did you ask their clients how they worked?
Also I'm tempted to quote a well known proverb about eggs and omlettes as I'm sure you've seen scaffolding around a building before and must realise where it needed to be at your house.
A bit of forethought you could have moved some of your stuff or covered it up.
