Think it's a type of Brugmansia, but not the tree type the seed heads gave me the clue. Someone else my be able to ID better.

This plant is growing in the hedge between my garden and the paddock - I don't think I have seen anything quite like it before! It would be great if it is a Brugmansia, BB - do you think I should pot it up and bring it indoors? I did have a bird feeder in that part of the garden up until a few months ago, so I suppose it could have started life as bird seed

Hi Rita
Yes it is a Brugmansia - as to which sort I have no idea, - perhaps someone else can help there.
I think that you will find that it flowers white and is probably best left where it is - they are all poisonous as you will know but nowadays there are some beautiful sorts, and something tells me that is not one of them .... although I could well be wrong of course.

In Sept I saw a white one growing in rough land opposite holiday villa and have bought a Purple flowering one for the gdn there, thats how I recognised the seed head. I've a feeling they are annual or half hardy. They are not like the Trees/shrubs which have woody stems. The purple one didn't survive.
I dug up the white one and potted it up, it was only about 2' high and very straggly looking thing, the leaves just fell off after a few days so I took off one of the seed heads and bought it home. It maybe worth while keeping an eye on the seed head and going from there.

It's definately a Datura/Brugmansia/Angels Trumpet Rita I'm certain. If you scroll down nearly to the bottom on this link there is a picture of the seed head. Black Currant Swirl is the Purple one I got and lost. www.b-and-t-world-seeds.com/Angel.htm

Sweetleaf, I did have some Nyger seed feeders in that part of the garden - but I've no idea what a Nyger plant looks like or even if there is such a beast. BB - I think I will remove one of the seed heads once it looks ripe. I love growing mystery seeds - you just never know what will be produced - quite exciting really - well I think so anyway

I picked my seed head before it was ready really but as you can see from the pic it seems to have continued to ripen and has started to split open. www.theseedsite.co.uk/db6c.htmlWe'll have to see what we can do next spring Someone must have grown them near you or the birds have drop seed. I left the plant in a pot on the garden in Portugal so hopefully the other seeds will drop and grow there too. It's is all rather exciting
