Tomorrow, i will be embarking on a serious diet. Since giving up smoking nearly 3 years ago, i have put on 5 stone. I weigh nearly 20 stone now i i feel s**t....tired, lethargic etc. Now i know what i've got to do....cut out the rubbish and get more excercise but i need motivation and inspiration. My problem is the break times at work....my day starts at 5.30 am when i have my breakfast...usually porridge and a coffee. I get to work at 6.30am and have a cup of tea and then at 9.30 am, we have our morning break which is when i eat most. At 12.30, i work through my dinner (although i'm can stop if i want) and i usually have a herbal infusion and a banana. I get home at 3.30 after picking the kids up and sometimes have a sandwhich and then dinner is at 7ish. So here's my proposal 5.30 Porridge, semi skimmed milk, splenda sugar Coffee 6.30 Cup Tea 9.30 6 slices ryvita, low fat spread, low fat cheese spread, cucumber Low fat yoghurt Go ahead bar Banana 12.30 4 Ryvita as above, Low fat yoghurt Banana Small portion grapes 3.30 sandwhich using nimble bread 6.30 Jacket potato, low fat cream cheese Half a tin of beans copious amounts of veg and salad stuff I will also be upping my excercise But the biggest problem will be jacking in the beer....i love a beer and i do drink most nights....a few cans of lager, bitter or guinness. So that will have to stop too. I've kicked the fags into touch....i know i have the willpower to lose weight if i need to. Any inspiration, tips, help, recipes etc Wish me luck

I gave up smoking this year too Andy...and have piled on the weight. I think that you'll find that just by cutting out the beer (OK get it down to one a night to start with) and upping your intake of fruit and veg you'll lose weight anyway. With your active job you shouldn't try starving yourself as although you will loose weight quickly you will find it difficult to keep it off. It's much better to loose slowly (and easier to keep off) If you cut out the cr@p like too many crisps and chocs, fried foods and saturated fat, you can still eat a lot, be full up and less likely to give up. I'd always advise somebody with a lot of weight to loose to check with their GP first (or your practice nurse) and joining a weight loss group can be fun too...more men go to these groups than most people realise..... I'm following a weight watchers plan and am managing OK...I have a varied diet, lots of 'treats' and the support of a group... Good Luck Andy and I'm here if you need me! CPB

Don't ever go ON a diet, it also means that you can go Off a diet also which can then be very demoralising, the tendency is then to not bother. The best way is to gradually adapt your current eating habits to something that is more sensible & as CPB says, do it gradually. If you make huge changes quickly you will start to feel really hungry & that is when you are most likely to eat the rubbish.
(btw, this is a listen to what I say, not what I do!)

I agree with what has been said - you have a very active job and therefor need the calories to see you through the day. I think rather than you going on a "diet" you first should look at what you are eating and perhaps try to eat more healthily by reducing your fat and sugar intake. I've been told that the first 4 pounds are the easiest to loose, as after that, the body thinks there is a famine and hangs on to what it's got to be on the safe side.

Hi Andy,
First i want to tell you it is GREAT that you quit smoking, with regards to your health this was the best thing to do!
I quit smoking 2 years ago and I slimmed at the same time 7 kilos (I don't know how much a stone is). I did this by following Montignac Rules + jogging half an hour 3 times a week. I think the exersice was what made me lose weight and I felt in an excellent form. I gave up the dark brown beers (Guinness, yummie and Trappist, I'm Belgian)
Since then however my job made me go abroad even more and I gave up the running (silly me) and I began to eat more crisps etc. So Now I gained again 4 kg <yikes>.
I will start again my diet, and maybe the running. The diet is matter of combining. E.g. eat vegetables + meat or fish, but then leave out the potatoes or pasta or rice. Or eat vegetables with rice. Don't eat white bread but very dark bread with a lot of fibres in it. Same goes for pasta and rice. Try not to eat potatoes (however weight watchers are not against them). Try to cut on the beer, but reward yourself once or twice a week with a good glass of your favourite beer.
What you could also do it follow weight watchers, then you can eat e.g. 20 points a day. You can also save some points a day, so that every few days you can spend some pounts to a beer.
I loved eating Snickers or Twix, but since I read they are the equivalent of a hot meal, I gave up on them.
I read again your menu, I have to tell you that bananas and grapes are fruits with a lot of sugar, better is to eat apples. Go easy on the peas, beans, carrots and mais, they also contain fattening stuff (farina??). Eat more peppers, lettuce, brocolli, ...
Good luck and let us know how you go on. I will try t be brave too Anneliesje

I actually don't believe in "diets", I believe that the only way to lose weight and keep it off is to change your eating habits gradually, take less alcohol but more exercise and don't be too down on yourself if you have a bad day and revert to eating unhealthy stuff or have a few beers. Just accept that you've had a bad day and try and get back on track the next day again. I lost nearly 2 stone a couple of years ago by not drinking alcohol, walking to work and generally eating healthier. Unfortunately, I slipped back into my old ways and am now bigger than I've ever been Definitely FA x

Some good advice from everyone andy. What ever you do don't make it hard for yourself, you need to enjoy the food you eat it won't then seem like a diet. Initially you may find it easier to cut down on portion sizes particularly any really bad stuff that you may currently be eating, at the same time bring in a few healthier foods. For example if you love your mashed spuds or chips cut down by a 1/4. Porridge for breakfast is excellent, slow burning so keeps you full for longer also something like Special K is good to ring the changes. You should try and eat less towards the end of the day also try eating a lot slower. I guess everything in moderation sums it up. I followed these simple rules and since I finished work in April have lost a stone and it's not really seemed like a diet. I don't do any particular exercise but I'm more active now I'm not sat at a desk all day. I still have things like biscuit, cake or chocolate bars so do allow yourself sensible treats. Good luck it sounds like we are all behind you

I agree with FA's philosophy regarding dieting, the most effective way is to have a healthy approach to life in general. This should certainly remove most of any excess weight, and most of all, make you a fitter and healthier person. Accepting physical exercise as a normal part of life is probably a hidden key, since this will tend to keep weight down, even when indulging as happens at certain times of the year.
Good luck.

Well the VERY best of luck Andy. There are wise words on here about healthy eating and exercise but one thing I would add is: don't set yourself unrealistic targets as you'll get fed up if you don't meet them and start to give up! I work harder physically than nearly everyone I know (men and woman) and I eat very healthily but losing weight has been really difficult since I had my youngest daughter at approx 168 years old so you have my sympathy......could you try drinking non alcoholic beer? Or is that anathema?? Just take your time and don't be in too much of a hurry to be weighed! Best of luck.

Another good advice : don't weigh yourself everyday. But every 3 days or so! I wish I could walk or bike to work , but it is 80 km... one way and most of the time I'm abroad, so then it is a few 100 kms. I envy people who can walk to work, I really do! In the city where I live I always take the bike or my feet Good luck!

I lost that much weight in that kind of time scale once. I resolved the problem by going through the fridge and throwing away all foods in excess of 6 months past their use by dates.

Progress update I've been pretty good....i haven't restricted myself to a strict diet but just made little changes. No more crisps and cakes, i haven't had a beer for a week and i've replaced my big door stop sarnies at work with ryvita with cucumber and cream cheese on. Dinners have been largely the same although i haven't had any curries or other fat laden foods. Been doing more excercise and next week sees me getting busy at work with some big, over grown shrubberies having to be completely ripped out so that'll burn up a few calories. But i don't know if i've lost any weight as i haven't weighed myself at all.....i just know i feel a bit better though and not so bloated. Watch this space !!!

o you have any means of heating food at work? I worry that you will get 'fed up' of ryvita and fall by the wayside. A bow lof soup and a few less ryvita for lunch could be the answer.

I never weighed myself on a diet as I was always depressed even when I felt slim so I went by how I felt and how my clothes fitted.
Then I changed jobs and now none of my clothes fit. My exercise changed but my diet didn't quick enough. Still, I'd survive longer in freezing water now with my extra layer of blubber :-D

Well done Andy, feeling better in yourself is half the battle. I've always been a bit of a yo-yo dieter but have been trying to be more grown up about it. I've been eating sensibly for 3 weeks and have lost 6 lbs so far. I weigh in once a week at the same time on the same scales so I think that they're fairly reliable. I allow myself the odd naughty treat (else life wouldn't be worth living) this week it was a chip cob! Of course the treats don't always have to be FOOD....a nice big glass a cider next week methinks...

Well done cpb thats an ideal weekly loss, keep up the good work. I find now that after 8 months I've settled at 11st 6-8lb, so thats 1 stone lost and I just vary that couple of lb. Can't eat such big meals as I used to, which is good. I don't even think about it now, just eat sensibly really.
