Hi All I am still finding it confusing to use these boards ( says more about me than the boards!!) I find it longwinded trying to have a conversation - the threads seem so long and a bit disjointed. Do people stick to one or two favourite boards/threads or trawl through the lot?? I find that by the time I've found something I'm interested in ( I'm not keen on clematis and lots of threads are about them) it's time for me to go and do something else!!! I desperately want to keep in touch and post more messages, but I'm obviously doing something wrong as I can't even find threads I've posted on at an earlier time - please HELP the terminally confused and put me on the path to enlightenment or I'll have to revert to the "pale and flabby" side

Hia Auricula!
I must admit that there is an awful lot going on and it takes some getting used to. I tend to glance at some of the headings that I find interesting: Gardening Chat; Beds & Borders and General Chat in particular. I also ALWAYS bookmark topics that I'm interested in so I can check the list and see if they've been added to - I find it makes responding much easier rather than having to trawl.
I hope this helps you a bit, and that it gives you confidence to keep trying. It's lovely and friendly here, and not all about clematis - honest!

Well, if I can do it - so can you - I'm positive! I've got into the habit of clicking on the 40 last posts at the bottom of the home page just for a quick look at who's saying what and if I want to see what people have posted on threads I've written on I just click on my profile and have a look at the last posts on the list. Sometimes I change the number so I can see if I've missed anything if I haven't been on the board for a while (doesn't happen often!). I never do anything more complicated than that! Hope it helps....

Then, as far as threads that you have posted on goes, you can view all of your own posts via your profile. To access this quickly, click on your display name, and then select how many posts you want to look at. The default is 10, but you can go up to 9,999! You can also bookmark any thread on the board, which again generates an icon in your profile. It's easy once you get used to it.

I went through every board the other week and did "mark as read" on every one. That made it look like all threads had been read by me (so none of them said "new" by the side).
Now I check in every day and find all the threads that have new posts. I read those that I want to read and then mark the rest as read again so that I only see the new posts each time I come on board.
I usually have a "route" through the board - gallery, garden chat, general board, funnies and then on to any of the other boards that take my fancy. I quite often use the "forum jump" at the bottom of each board to go from one to another without going back to the main board each time.
I admit, I found this site quite confusing at first and thought there were too many boards. However, now that Spruance & Rosefriend have tidied it up and I'm more used to it, I find it fairly easy to navigate round and ok to keep up with a conversation (no more difficult or easy than the beeb, to be fair).
There are also boards I don't visit - the water gardening one, "links" & pets mainly because I don't really have any interest in them. A bit like the beeb - I never went on to the "gardening on TV" board because it didn't interest me. If you think of each board as a mini version of the beeb's "design inspiration" board and then just read the threads on each one that interest you, it'll soon becaome 2nd nature finding your way around.
I also found it helped keep up with conversations much better when I turned the signatures off. Less clutter within the body of the thread !
Hope to see you here more often
FA x
Ps - In a way, I'm glad you haven't been here much. We haven't had to discuss Ipswich's dire performance at Layer Road !!!! Mind you, 5-0 at home to Luton today was a significant improvement of late !!

I think everyone probably uses the boards in different ways, once you get familiar with the different sections it's not so bad, you can then just browse through the one's you are interested in. I tend to scan through the other sections every now and then. As already said it's a good idea to bookmark any you want to keep really upto date on, you can then go into your own Profile and view the list of threads you have Bookmarked. Because I log on daily I tend to firstly go straight to the bottom of the page to FORUM STATISTICS and then into.... View the 40 most recent posts.......this way I can see what is currently being talked about. Keep at it, it all falls into place once you have had a few goes, promise. Just shout up if you get stuck, I've asked some stupid questions before but hayho were only human

One other suggestion Auricula... at the risk of confusing you... as you become more familiar with regular posters and their interests (perhaps particularly where they coincide with yours) - well, click on their names - their most recent contributions will come up, and you can 'get involved' in their threads...

Hi Auricula, if you go to your private messages (link at top of page) & then click on preferences, you can choose to be sent an email every time you receive a pm - since I selected yes for this, I've also been receiving an email every time a thread I've bookmarked gets a new post on it - saves a lot of hassle trying to remember where I've posted, & the email sends you a link to take you straight to the thread as well. All you have to do is remember to bookmark any thread you post on!
Also if you look at the home page, on the right hand side it tells you what day/time the last post on each of the boards was - there's no point going into a board if there have been no posts on it since you last looked there.
And when you are in a board, if you've read a thread before and only want to see the new posts, click on "new" beside the post title rather than on the post title itself and it will take you to whatever's been posted since you were last there.
