As I write this there are 8 "guests" viewing and over the last few days, I've seen upwards of a dozen viewing at any one time. Why don't some of you guests "take the plunge", register and join in just like Blackrose has done recently ? We're not that bad to get along with (most of the time ) and your contributions would be welcome. Don't worry if you don't know a lot about gardening - I certainly don't - but it would be nice to see some new "faces" on here from time to time ! FA x

Well spotted FA and well said. Now the dark nights are here we probably will get a few guests looking in and hopefully signing up with us ;D. There are currently 37 members that have registered but haven't posted at all yet

Is there a different between being a guest and lurking? Can someone lurk without being "seen"?

Plocket
If you make yourself invisible (via your profile), you can lurk without anyone knowing you're there (apart from it saying "1 invisible user" at the bottom of the screen).

But what's the point in that? Surely it's easier just to stay logged on? Does it really matter whether people see you are online or not?

You must bear in mind that some people are happy just to browse, or 'lurk' to use internet jargon ... and others are happy to register, but then have no wish to involve themselves in the 'banter' of the threads. As the third largest poster on A4A (across a couple of usernames) I was heavily into posting, and got involved in all sorts of fun chats, and some people even thought of me as a gardening guru (they were wrong, to set the record straight). However, behaviour on that site over recent months was tiresomely critical of me, I was endorsed by the 'management' as being in the right, but the attritional effect was that I lost heart. Hence I rarely post, or chat on that site, even although I still have massive respect for the site and its admin. Sorry if this sounds like a rant, it isn't meant to, I am trying to explain that people have their own reasons if they wish to stay in the shadows. The GWD membership WILL increase, as this is a happy and active community

I understand that people want to browse before joining, but surely you have to be a member to be invisible? If that's the case, what's the point of even joining?

Yes Plocket, you do need to be a member to be able to make yourself invisible and I don't understand why you would want to do that. . Why wouldn't you want peole to see you were on line.

I was lurking before I joined but that was just getting to know the boards and having a look around.

I've tried being "funny" ;D but total waste of time. Right!!" got that off my chest , now will somebody please say hello.! By the way ' I love getting my hands into the soil , only took over garden ,when O H was unable to cope, due to ill health. So ,looking foreword to getting lots of good advice Cheers T T

I think that we might be a bit intimidating to new posters...not intentionally and once they sign on we're v welcoming and LOVELY...but we've built up quite close little community here don't you think? I haven't been on the beeb MB for a while so I lurk there sometimes.....feel a bit like a peeping Tom! BUT they're always as friendly as ever when I actually post something. ;D I did a bit of 'lurking' here myself between 0300-0500..no point signing in as nobody else was here...it's really lonely don't you think...when you arrive at the site and it says '1 guest' is on-line...and you realise that's YOU! ...didn't even see C3D I didn't.. Mind you I only popped in to have a look..was working most of the time...oooh only one hour 35 minutes and I can go home. I'm for a cuppa CPBx

When I first started this thread, I never considered the possibility that members would be looking at the board without signing in. I signed in ages ago and have left myself signed in "forever" so I'm never logged out, even when I switch the PC off. When I come back here, I'm already logged in automatically so I always show as me, never as a "guest".
Sorry, maybe some of the mysterious guests are just members who aren't signed in.

Your probably right Andy - I always sign in as if I don't - I can see the signatures some of which I find are distracting , irritating and make the page too long. I don't think it's bad for a newcomer to read for a while before they register and start posting either.

But if they don't register they are Guests LL, not invisible. I also perused these boards as a guest before joining, and now stay logged in all the time.

Good Evening and welcome tattyhead! I've just been reading this thread and would just say that often I have a quick look and don't bother to log on. Mainly it's because I'm in a rush but sometimes it's an obscure feeling of guilt and worrying that I should go and get a life and not stare at a screen ANY LONGER! I can't help it - I come from a long line of busy women to whom leisure is evil unless you are at least knitting something....(can't knit and type, me. Actually can't knit either - OMG the guilt!).
