Would it be possible for me to grow a tree from a nut? If so, then how? There are a lot of Walnut trees in the village and I would quite like to grow one as reminder of the happy times we have had living here

I should think it's possible. You'd need to stratify the seed (see my piece on "time to sow those seeds" in the greenhouse section)
They have aromatic....almost orangy scented leaves. Pick one and crush it (if there's still any leaves on them)

it's weird, because, a friend of mine used to bring walnut seedlings into work all the time because the 'come up all over the place' at his house, yet the black walnut we have at work has no seedlings anywhere (its a good 100-150 years old) and when someone asked me the other day how they should get the nuts to grow i had to check (having never done it myself) and all it said was; sow, now, in a seed bed and leave them to it for a couple of years or in the spring after stratification

I seem to recall they're self-fertile, erratic germinators, rita - so put a couple of dozen in a large pot, leave outside and sod's law dictates you'll have more seedlings than you know what to do with!
One winter should take care of the timing, and no, you don't need to open the shell. Remove from the husk though (may be an inhibitor). Wash your hands afterwards (and if you're tempted to crush the leaves and smell them) - something else dredged up from tree-growing memory - leaves and husks are, if not actually poisonous, upsetting.

I have grown 2 walnut trees from seeds Rita. It may have been a fluke though as I seem to remember just chucking them in a pot! They are now 10 years old, about 12ft tall and very healthy but no walnuts yet.......
