I've been lusting after the Japanese style small trees/shrubs that have been topiarised (is that a word?) so that the structure of the branches can be seen and the foliage is confined to 'bobbles'
I think that they're called 'cloud pine' and are VERY expensive, probably take years to produce...well I have a yen for one <snigger> and the only way I'm ever going to get one is if I can grow one myself.
Any advice as to what sort of tree or shrub I should use? and how would I go about it!? CPBxxx

Been to a GC today and purchased a Pinus sylvestris 'chantry blue'...I shall have to contemplate it for a bit before I set to with the loppers...here's hoping.

the nice thing about cloud topiary, CPB, is that as it's 'free form' no-one can challenge your ideas... a lopsided cone or spiral, a hen that looks like a duck, that's just begging for criticsm which is most often unthinking of the effort that's gone into the plant - but passing clouds... You get in there, (make haste slowly...) OM. ps, not very informative at the moment (but may be if I get my way) the European Boxwood and Topiary Society website: www.ebts.org

Once upon a time a long time ago, CPB and 4P were in the sixth form at school together.....we used to watch Monty Python's Flying Circus, and would buy the records (aah vinyl....)...learn the sketches and songs off by heart and quote them at inappropriate moments...and then fall about laughing at our own cleverness...well we WERE only 17!
One of our favourite songs was the Eric the Half a Bee song...which began...
Is this a wretched demi-bee? Half asleep upon my knee SOME freak From a laboratory NO it's Eric The half a bee.....
the chorus was...
Tiddly Dum Twiddly dee Eric The Half a Bee...
Maybe someone clever will post a link so that you can hear it...I might even have got some of the words wrong but well I AM in my fifties and it WAS a loooong time ago....ay 4P?
