Can anyone tell me whay my fatsia flowers are so attractive to bluebottles? I would like to take a picture of it, but there are about 5 or 6 that won't leave it alone. Lovely big flower spike too.

Just went out to have a look, Jonah - definitely no bluebottles! Now around the compost bin, that's a different matter ... cheers ...

Mine isn't particularly near the compost bin, so I don't think they are being drawn to it by that. I always thought they were drawn to rotten things, and my fatsia looks far from that. Maybe some little critters had popped their clogs and landed on it. ;D

Just had another look to take a pic before it finishes flowering. Even though the garden is soggy from rain, they are still there. I'm intrigued

Hi Jonah, It is to do with the smell that the fatsia flowers are giving off, pollination purposes. Sara

Thanks for the explanation Sara. Pity it is attracting bluebottles - yeuch! Much rather it be something a little more appealing. Would it be enough alone to attract them , or is ther something more sinister lurking out there that is drawing them in? Anyone else noticed them on theirs?

Oh No! Mine is just putting out the flower heads and I've been patiently waiting for them to open....hopefully it's too cold for bluebottles up here and I was intrigued as to what they smelt like too...not sure now. I'll let you know if they are attracting any nasties.
