Oh dear! We have just taken the 2 very large conifers out ( the blue one and the cham pisifera etc.) and we now have 2 very large spaces! They were very old and dying back so I know it was the right thing to do but now I have to think of new plants to put in and I think I need some help, please! Our garden is south facing. Has anyone got any ideas please?

What lovely planting, sorry about your trees, difficult to think of something which would fill such gaps. I wonder what the border will make of the different light & wind?

Do you want something as dense or would you consider something different? You already have a pretty eucalyptus so how about something more delicate to go with it? Cotinus are very pretty and then you could consider something spring or winter flowering. Or what about a black leaved elder: Sambuca Nigra "Black Lace" is very pretty.

Thanks everyone! The spaces left after taking the conifers out are approx.4'x3'! We already have a Mahonia 'Charity' - just by the bird table. I think I was in a bit of a panic yesterday when I saw the spaces that were left! I like the idea of a Cotinus Not sure about Sambucus, though - we tried one before and it just died. We have a Viburnum opulus in the wrong place - planted it 2 years ago! I wonder if we could move it In front of the blue conifer we have a Myrtle and a Weigela - Hoping that with more light they will grow better now that the conifer is out! I would like an Arbutus, too! I am going on a bit so will stop now

This year I have decided to use 2 Obelisks where the Conifers were - it will give me a bit more time to think about what I can do
