Do I need to bring it inside for the winter?

Depends on how frostproof the pot is , whether the soil will get frozen in the pot & kill the roots & how small the tree is. Older trees can cope with our winters, young ones suffer in a ahrd frost but usually seem to come back in Spring.

My bay is just a youngster - about 2 foot tall I potted it using a loam based compost BTW

I think personally that it would be better outside if you can find somewhere sheltered Rita. They are quite sensitive to cold wind and you may get some leaf browning but a quick trim come Spring will soon rejuvenate it. I have one in a pot in front of my barn which has come through all our winters here since the last century! If in doubt a fleece cover during really cold spells would give sufficient protection I should think.

It's by the back door so in a fairly well sheltered spot - I think it can stay there 4P

Personally I keep mine outside all the time but they are sheltered. If you can you should wrap your bay in Hort.Fleece to help protect it, but as you say it's sheltered it should be ok. Good luck!

My parents have two and they've been outside in pots for 10 years !!!!!
Shouldn't have any probs Rita but you could always but a bit of fleece or bubble wrap around the top of the compost

Had my Bay Tree for about 3 years; it is outside, not protected but it is sheltered - just by the front door
