Hi all, Im never happy when coming to plant things. An example: this morning i planted my 5 new bare root roses. Ive been itching to do this for a while, so i got stuck in and planted them. Now im not happy with there positioning and im gonna have to move some tomorrow. I love gardening but i cant say i enjoy planting. I worry if its deep enough, the right distance between them, have i put enough compost in, is it in the right position etc etc... It drives me nuts !!! Has anybody else suffered from this disease ?? I move things quite a bit too, and often when they are fairly well established! I wouldn't worry about it Mr G - you are obviously on a quest for perfection!

I must say that I am guilty of that too. There is a lot to be said for the idea of arranging the plants (on the surface) in the places that you want (or think that you want) to plant them out. This would be more difficult for bare root plants of course, but you could always just prop them up with a cane to give you an idea. So long as you move them before they get established, you won't do them any harm.

Mr Grinch, I am itching to move everything, bar the well established shrubs, in my front garden. Problem is half the late perennials aren't showing yet, so I fear I would slice through a few if I did start now, plus I'm worried about the weather turning midway. I want to take them all out and reposition them where I will be happy [for now anyway!].

I am on heavy clay. Survive or die is my motto. I do put things in pots in the border just to see if it is the right position. But once things are in..... I do chuck a lot out but I have a pretty wild garden and some things tend to grow at monster speed. Dutchy

I'm always moving things - they don't seem to mind!! Mind you, I've never lived anywhere for more than 6 years and as OH says this will be our last house ( and we're good for at least another 30years I hope) this in itself will be a challenge!!

Hi Mr G
There is almost an audible sigh from my garden when I have my fork to hand. If something isn't right, out it comes and gets moved what ever the time of the year. Most survive - eventually. ;D

Well, is it? I slot things in where they fit and wait, if its not happy it will show you, my Weigelia is in full sun, and got scorched last year, perhaps a bit of shade wont hurt?

Mr G you really have to stop worrying soooooooo much or you'll not enjoy the gdn I'm sure even the experts get it wrong sometimes ;D My OH used to say I should plant things in a wheelbarrow because I used to move stuff that much . Got over it after therapy ;D and now, well.......I have the occasional laps ;D

Dutchy, perhaps it's the heavy clay that kills off the Buddleias? If you have a patio just drop a few seeds between the cracks - that seems to work in my garden even without me dropping the seeds in. They just arrive from my neighbours unkempt and unloved Buddleia (why won't he cut it down?.

I think im going to move it ! Its facing North and wont get any sun i dont think. Baring in mind the scorching thing, i might find a dappled shady area. I have one spot facing South East and under a tree but the shade isnt dense, the ground can get a bit wet but i think this spot might be better !!

I like to think of it as 'Feng Shui' (however you spell it) in the garden! I keep a lot of things in pots in my small garden...largely so that I can move stuff about...I'm satisfied for a few weeks then I have to move everything again! I think that there is ONE area in our garden that I'm relatively happy with. It's at the back of the garden & we built it whilst grieving for our much loved (and still missed) dog....it has a little home made gazebo with ivy growing up and around it..little acers and hardy ferns live there all year..so I'm contemplating actually planting them IN THE GROUND!! ooer. V scary!..I will still have my big tree fern and bananas in pots that go into the area in the warmer weather...shall I risk it?...it's getting rather crowded out there with HUNDREDS of pots... So you see Mr Grinch...indecisive is my middle name too...(bit of a mouthful ay? Cheerypeaindecisivebrain...coo ;D)

Sorry Mr G a little diversion here. Moving topic instead of topiary ;D
