OOh I dursent sow anything yet....last year I had seed trays all over the shop by the first week of February. The problems I had were that I ran out of space and the seedlings bolted whilst it was too manky for them to go outside.... Decided to wait until mid to late February before I get started here in the midlands...praps the climate's a tad more accommodating where you are.... ;D

Captain, How did you go about sowing the Mecanopsis. What is the follow up trick you are going to use on it. I want to start but due to a minor stay in hospital am grounded for at least another week. AND VERY BORED. Can I wait a Little more before I start? Dutchy

AND VERY BORED. Can I wait a Little more before I start? Dutchy Hi Dutchy! You can wait for as long as like and best wishes from me. I'm sowing hardy stuff at the moment, which may take a while to germinate. How I sowed - In a 5'' (13cm) pot with moist seed compost (no nutrients) on the surface and a clear plastic bag over the top. Now in greenhouse. Ideally should have light, kept reasonably cool, but not direct sun (another reason for sowing in January). The trick? Presumably the trick you refer to is to NOT let it flower in the first year, otherwise they are an annual. Even then it's no guarantee of success I know. If you have any other tricks please tell....

Just what I heard. You are gona love this. Sow indoors 20 degrees C for one week than place somewhere with only 2 up to 5 dgrees C for 4 weeks than again 1week of 20 degrees C. The seeds will then germinate.
I was hoping you could tell me that it is a lot easier

Oh well! But the greenhouse was over 20C for much of yesterday and we are only going to see highs of 4C for the next week or two in the UK, then a return to mild weather. So maybe I'll get lucky. My notes for what they are worth say keep at a constant 13C to 15C!!! Here's hoping......

Wow! Surprisingly on past evidence (we have never seemed to grow the same thing) you have a lot of overlap with myself.... I was potting on Gaillardia Goblin just this weekend. I haven't got Glaucium burnt orange......yet! You could have mentioned it earlier

I have bought my trial sweet peas, I was going to sow them, then thought about two/three weeks on & what I would do with them so thought I would wait till Feb....next week. I intend to sort other seeds to day & get the broad beans in. My friend lost several panes from his greenhouse in the gale, hopefully his seedlings will survive a spell in the garage.

Seems a bit early to me to be sowing.
Shan't sow the cactus and succulent seeds until early March. Even with a propagator they need an extra bit of warmth now and then plus a bit more light.

I have only been sowing perennials, some say they may flower this year if sown early. Mine are kept in the conservatory, I just thought if I started them off now it would make me feel like I'm doing something productive give them a head start ;D . They'll go outside when it's nice and warm, I've got a very sheltered spot, even my eccremocarpus seems to be evergreen here! That was sown as a half hardy annual. I don't generally do a lot of annuals sowing, just the odd thing, most of the annuals I sow seem to end up taking over the garden.

Sorry Roxann, I can't help, I do mine in the conservatory. I've sown a few more: Ferula tingitana Angelica Hispanica Viola Sororia Juncus ensofolius Pardanthopsis and an annual lobelia. Sorry for the spelling/ lack of full names, but I used rather a thick marker pen on a small seed tray and haven't got the packets to hand!
