i dont under stand the little vent's on my propagater. do i leave them open or do i close them, and when and why barbara

I tend to leave mine closed until the seed has germinated Barbara, and then leave them open.
On an unheated propagator or on one without thermostatic control, opening the vents is the only way to control the heat/humidity.

Yeah, you'll need to open the vents if things get a bit warm. Despite the need for heat and humidity, good ventilation is essential to prevent fungal diseases which thrive in damp, warm conditions.

now my plants are about an inch high do i leave the lid off, or just the vents open,(its not a heated one.

Lid off completely now...they really only need the humidity for germination and by leaving the lid on, you may now encourage damping off.
