Ever wondered how to pot on large, awkward or prickly plants both easily and effectivly. Well here's how easy it is. I needed to pot on my ever increasing red banana so i took some photos. 1) Get your pot, compost and anything else you need. You'll also need the pot off the plant to be repotted. Fill the new pot with compost and place the old pot in the middle....leaving a couple of inches gap at the top for watering. Firm the compost well. 2) Gently remove the old pot making sure the walls of the hole stay intact. This may not work too well on dry or gritty compost. 3) Place the plant rootball straight into the hole 4) water in and enjoy

Indeed Andy,
If I'm repotting cacti in winter soil has to be absolutely dry. Can be damp in summer though, then that will work.
Good tip.

What a lovely plant, Andy. Which banana is it? A banana is on my list of plants to get for this year, but it will be an outside variety. That's if we stay, as I know where it is going here. I re plant most of my plants this way, especially cyclamen. It makes it so easy.

This banana is Maurelli Keith or the red banana. I think the best one for keeping outside is Basjoo

Andy any tips on growing banannas from seed. Daughter brought me back some "Souvenirs de Canarias" and one of the was a packet of banana seeds.
All the seed packets say the same thing -
Sow in summer and in warm weather 3 - 4 cm. Macerate seeds for 24 hours in warm water. Soil sandy clay with turf and good drainage with humidity.
Help......

In the absence of anything else Roxann, go with the instructions - 'sandy clay with turf' could be John Innes no3 at a pinch and I'd guess that 'humidity' is the key - a heated propagator. Probably the reason for a lack of info is that (so I hear from a niece who worked on a plantation in Australia) pretty well all propagation is from cuttings... OM
