I wish someone would devise a boot for gardening that didn't collect soil/mud in the grooves of the sole - I am fed up with leaving a trail across the lawn and patio. I wear wellies when doing serious gardening and they are just as bad

I wouldn't mind if it was just acroos the lawn and patio. It's when its across the kitchen and dining area and lounge and hall and stairs........
Not popular with Mrs Cactus.

Yeah I know what you mean, I thought I'd grown again the other day then realised it was just a couple of inches of mud on the sole of my boots, and yes it makes a mess of the lawn and slabs. I've been warned, BOOTS OFF AT THE DOOR. You could try a building department and see if you can get those disposable over shoes, that would block off the grips and can just be thrown in bin when finished. I can get them at work, mmm a wee buisness plan......lol

I've tried different footwear including bare feet (not recommended). The best i have had is clogs....yep that's right the type the dutch wear. Was excellent for the garden....had smooth soles with rubber grips on so they never seem to collect soil in them, they were comfortable to wear and best of all you can kick them off at the door and they wear well. I find wellies too hot and cold depending on the season, not particularly comfortable. I've tried shoes and boots but still prefer the clogs....just can't seem to find any clogs to replace my old ones.

I prefer my hunter wellies when digging and they give good protection against brambles and nettles.

Can't remember the last time I wore my wellies in the gdn. I have a pair of slip on clog type shoes, an old pair of light weight brouges (sp) and an old pair of slip on trainers that I wear in the gdn. There are all old pairs that have seen better days. OH bought me a pair of those short Mucker Boots, think thats what you call them, there a bit heavy.

I have all sorts of gardening footwear in fact barring my stillettos (yuk) I wear all my shoes to garden. If the mood takes me I generally forget to change, or convince myself that this time Ill be more careful. ........consequently all my trainers are machine washable .

I wear my wellies pretty much all the time (unless I'm driving Dad's car) and I find them really comfy. I don't do girly shoes. I don't mind the mud as I have a handy newspaper pad at every door ready - my pet annoyanace is gravel. It gets stuck in the bottom of my wellies and clicks as I walk which really winds me up. My dear BIL shoved a load of little gravel in the yard outside when he was digging up the drains (his hobby : and it REALLY got on my nerves until I raked it all away from my door - I prefer the mud!

I've tried different footwear including bare feet (not recommended). Oooh, I disagree. I've posted before about the joys of barefoot gardening. I love it. Mind you, I hardly ever where socks or shoes when I'm at home, even at this time of year I wander around outside barefoot. It's great. The only weather I absolutely refuse to go barefoot in is the snow ! FA x

FA i would agree with you as i go barefoot most of the summer and only in the house in the winter. I have earthed up, planted, weeded etc in bare feet. The stones are sore on the feet and I couldn't dig with bare feet I'm even known to try and cross my gravel drive with bare feet usually accompanied by the words oooo, eeh, ouch.

I used to wear all sorts of old shoes, but at Gardener's World Live last year I discovered Muddies. They are a tad expensive but really comfortable and waterproof. I also keep a pair of Cloggies by the back door to slip on to nip out to the bins or the greenhouse and so on

Look what I bought today - gone totally mad. The right pair is what I always wear - have two or three pairs - very conservative. Now look what I have bought - my OH thinks that I have gone mad. Other colours were puce purple, blue, sickly green and that red. RF

Hi CC - we have had them for some years now here. They were on offer at Aldi today for Euro 3.79.
I love them as I don't get my feet wet either in the garden or hanging out the washing etc.

Tell me FA and ZW you are joking about gardening in bare feet I have just padded across my "always wet sodden lawn" to feed the birds and cant imagine doing it in bare feet I keep telling myself I will buy some clogs - seems a good idea - I too have walked into house in garden boots thinking they will not be mud encrusted underneath and the odd bit of mud falls off and gets trodden into the carpet

I hate having anything on my feet inside or out and wonder around most of the summer at home in bare feet. I do draw the line at digging without wearing clogs or wellies but weeding is fine

Barefoot in the garden - stepping on slugs ... ! Today got a pair of bright yellow 'ankle wellies' - perfect (I guess you know you've entered middle age when you're more thrilled by gardening shoes than slingbacks) ;D ... cheers ...

I love the feel of the cool grass on my feet too.....always cover up though when i'm mowing (can't be too careful). Oooh RF like the pink cloggies.....will have to keep an eye out for a pair.

I wasn't kidding either JW. I love wandering barefoot in the garden and do so more often than not. I walk around barefoot most of the time when I'm here, even in the winter months. I usually walk to the garage, shed & GH barefoot and have often weeded etc with no shoes or socks on.
If I'm spending all day outside, I do wear trainers but if it's only short periods I often do it barefoot. Lovely !

I have a pair of slip-on trainers with little 'grip' - a bit like drbill's, which since Spring Sprung I have been wearing instead of the usual DM boots.
I rescued them from the skip - they were my son's - when we moved. I think they are fabulously trendy and confirm my youthfulness, should anyone doubt it.
He thinks it simply confirms my 'sadness', they're so last year (or possibly the year before). OM
