We like the thinnings! Smallest daughter's great pleasure is dibbling about for tiny carrots, wiping them on her trousers and eating them straight from the ground. Your system sounds quite cunning though!

Your system sounds quite cunning though! Thinnings was about it last year 4P I think I will be using kitchenroll or the like as it will probally break down quickly. I suppose the same idea will work with seed mats that will fit in different size pots, herbs maybe or even annuals that need to be "placed" in the borders. Used to love Blue Peter ;D

Cooeee! You're an early bird too. Which carrots did you grow last year Roxann? I grow the early maturing ones like Nantes - I seem to get a better crop with them than the main crop type. We sow a couple of rows every fortnight or so through the summer so we always have sweet young ones. Our favourite.

Morning 4P
It was early nantes I tried. I am going to have to sieve my soil as it is full of shale, lack of water didn't help either but I am not giving up.
Got to go and get ready for work
