A funny thing happened to me today - I went to the big city with a friend of mine! This is a rare occurence as I am allergic to urban life - last time I went into Norwich was about 7 years ago! (What a bumpkin...) Anyway, I was absolutely amazed at the prices! Even the charity shops are shocking - how on earth do people afford to shop every week?? WHY on earth do people shop every week?? I was mainly window shopping actually but I did buy one or two things for Christmas presents (gotta to start to the dreaded process sometime...)and I KNOW I sound like a silly old woman but REALLY don't people buy a load of overpriced TAT!
Mind you , had a gorgeous lunch at the Waffle House - avocado and hummous on a waffle with mixed salad with a blue cheese dressing - YUM. I don't care if I ate 120.000 calories in one meal and smell worser than a garlic crunching skunk!

"The City" 4P? Which city? You surely didn't trek all the way into LONDON??? I'm glad you had a nice lunch though.
You've made me realise that I've not yet been to Birmingham, our nearest "proper" city, despite living up here for 5 1/2 years. I don't count Stoke or Wolverhampton as cities!!

Ah 4P...I remember the first time you went to Bedford on your own on the bus ! you kept the ticket didn't you? Still got it? I'm terribly impressed. ;D I like shopping, not terribly keen on big crowds...want to finish the yuletide present shopping before it gets too manic here in Leicester. I've bought a lot of Oxfam 'presents' again this year for a few rellies...got 2 alpacas and a goat so far! The youngsters all just want cash and OH will ask for something expensive and computery.....I need to do more overtime. Got some nice cards from Next today...they have Hamsters dressed in scarves and bobble hats on them...sooooo sweet.

It was Norwich - there is no reason on this earth that I would go to London unless it was to pick up a Lottery cheque (and it would have to be a BIG one). London stinks, is noisy, dirty, overcrowded and no one talks to you there.....oi dun't loik it muchly....

I'm with you 4P. Hate London with a passion and avoid the place like the plague (which is what you might catch if you spend too much time there). I did a training course for work a while back, which meant travelling to London one day a week for a year. Ugh - what a horrible experience and what a complete bunch of w*nkers commuters are. I've never seen so much ignorance and rudeness over getting a seat on a train. Pathetic. FA x

another exception 4pygmies..........my daughtr lives in london and while she might ignore you, it would not be intentional, and she doesn't have the plague. Apart from the defence of my daughter I agree with you. I can't really believe that anyone lives in London from choice.

Of course I do not know if anyone lives in London by choice and I have only been there 10 times or so, and always as a tourist. I Love London and people are very friendly! Every time I was looking at a map, someone came up te help me. I got free advice anywhere, anytime. Always in a nice way. I thought this was remarkable because I would hate to see my city (I live in a city, a little one) overrun by tourists all the time and surely I would curse them. Bravo Londoners!! I felt very welcome ! (only the prices are outrageous) Anneliese

Ooooooooo I love cities - I live close to Manchester and used to work there I miss the smell on a hot summer's day of the offices and the streets a type of hot tar smell mixed with old books They have Christmas (think German) markets on at the moment open until 8pm each evening in St Anns Square and St Alberts Square if anyone interested Nice to live in the country tho so I have the best of both worlds close by Chester is nice too, used to work there also, but doesnt have the feel of a city or the hustle and bustle

I hated living in London so much I moved 400 miles away and I rarely voluntarily go into Glasgow city centre. Can't stand the hustle and bustle. I do most of my shopping on-line unless it involves yet another bag of compost. If I could store the stuff, I'd buy a tonne of that on-line as well. My OH spent his first 5 years driving to work, now he commutes into the centre by train and thinks it's a big adventure. I prefer my own company until the very last minute and drive. I think I'm becoming a bit of a recluse !

I love London. Worked in the City for years and still enjoy it even though I am not there that often now.
I like the West End too - have to go there for work fairly often. My son worked there for years and showed me all sorts of odd things that I would have missed otherwise - mostly very good but very cheap restauarants.

Know exactly what you mean 4P - even though I love living in the centre of Dublin, I avoid the two main shopping streets like the plague. Rows of glossy identikit shops selling the same overpriced tat - you could be on a shopping street in London, Berlin or Madrid. According to the paper this morning Irish households will top the EU spending league this Christmas - but, interestingly, only 5% of respondents said they actually liked Christmas shopping! ... cheers ...
