Hi all. Managed to pick up some lime mint, common rosemary, purple sage and chives at the GC this weekend. I was planning on planting them in individual terracotta pots, but I vaguely remember reading that herbs were good under plants for roses. Is this right? What is the best way of using the herbs I bought in the garden? I'm new to this useful gardening! ;D

Evening Rosemother, Of the four you mention the only one I wouldn't grow in a pot is sage. It's shallow rooting but likes a space to spread! All herbs are good for wildlife gardening as they are popular with the bees and butterflies. The specific plant for planting under roses are the chives - it is supposed to protect from fungal diseases whilst covering up the lower branches which are often bare in roses. It's a very pretty combination anyway!

Thanks 4P! I think I might put the chives under one of the white roses.

Hlo Rosemother. I do love to see herbs in terracotta pots.... ;D Ask 4P! I have some thyme plants in big pots that have been clipped within an inch of their lives into little balls.... I have rosemary, thyme, bronze fennel, oregano and several types of mint . This is the first year I've overwintered them outside so I'll have to wait and see how they do. this year I want to grow the herbs in amongst the flowers, I especially like the idea of curled leaf parsley with bright orange marigolds....might look dreadfull but I'll wait and see. I haven't got any roses...but the herbs may be beneficial for my flowers too ;D
