I know a few of us listed what we have sown , but I was wondering how everyone had got on so far. My Aquilegia Chocolate soldiers are sprouting, but the Stellata aren't, I killed off the Ferula with anti bac spray, so had to start again. others putting in an appearance are Catananche, trifolium, Malva, dracocepholuem [sp?] and one harebell! What about you?

I've got chillies, aubergine, capcicum, carnations, basil, parsley, antirhinums, leeks and onions - but then I did start in mid-January!
Wating for the weather to warm so that I can make some space in GH (Mine is like CC's - stuffed to the roof with overwintering plants!) to prick them out.

Jonah - did you give your acquilia seeds any special treatment? I want to sow Nora Barlow and am a bit scard of getting it wrong and losing the lot. I wont sow all the seed at once - I've have learned that tip from here!

I don't sow any seeds until the end of Feb.! Until we start greenhouse no.2 up with some heat there just isn't room to start seeds off in greenhouse no.1! We were hoping to get the greenhouse going this weekend or the next and then I can pot on my many, many cuttings!

I sowed a 'Butterfly Collection' from B&Q about three weeks ago. I left them in a dark place thinking nothing would show for ages but when I went a week or so later to look at them the seedlings were busting a gut to get the lid off the seed tray. Thet are now lidless on the windowsill looking like a mad load of cress. I was so surprised that it happened so quickly.

Jonah - did you give your acquilia seeds any special treatment? I want to sow Nora Barlow and am a bit scard of getting it wrong and losing the lot. I wont sow all the seed at once - I've have learned that tip from here! No special treatment. Just put sieved compost and a bit of play sand in plug plant trays, popped them in and sprinkled a bit more on top. I'm surprised I get anything to grow! I find aquilegias generally germinate quite easily, but the stellata in the same tray haven't put in an appearance yet. Mine are in a heated conservatory, I put a plastic thing over them to start with as I find they dry out so quickly with the heating on. After germination is when I tend to have trouble, I struggle to keep up with the watering until they go out in the garden. Some of my Harebells have germinated, I'm so excited!!!

I had that with a butterfly collection I bought last year. Had so many seedlings I had nowhere to put them! I only used 1/8 of the total I sowed and they filled a massive planter. Then I got seeds from them too.

Oh dear, this thread reminds me that I didn't sow what I intended to late last autumn ... but: Cerinthe purpurescens sowed about 10 days ago have all sprouted and seem to be doing well; Bought one of Lidl's 'mini greenhouses' with red geranium seeds, sowed about a week ago - nothing yet; Sowed abutilon seeds 10 days ago, seed tray knocked accidentally by small person, everything stuffed back in so hopefully one or two will sprout ... cheers ...

I took a calculated risk with my tomatoes and the cold snap did for them despite being triple wrapped in bubble wrap in the conservatory , never mind I've got more seeds! The sweet peas, Nepeta and peas are going really well but they're still all in my bathroom where it's nice and cosy.

Nice one Karen ;D You just never know with those little babes do you! I checked the packet on one of mine [Lysimachia I think] and it could take 4 months to germinate! I'm going to have to be very patient with those!

I had a peep at my poorly tomato seeds today and I am very surprised but they seem to be recovering slightly! It just must have been the really really cold snap made them "unwell" looking. So that's good!

Hope you don't mind, but this seems as good a time (and certainly as good a place) as any to announce that the Trials sub will start this weekend, since it seems as good a time as any to sow some seeds...
There will be the opportunity to start your own 'Trials Diary', a bit like "My Garden/Allotment" - so watch for the launch, and when you think it's safe to sow, start a thread. Personally, I'm thinking along the lines of 'successional/insurance sowing'...

Hi jonah & 4P I thought that mine were going to do nothing, they were in my mini GH in my GH if you see what i mean. I brought the tom seed into my conservatory, but moved them into my kitchen at night. Now Ive moved my mini Into my conservatory while I'm away. My con gets hot in the day but is protected from direct sun by blinds and has a heater on timer, so hopefully it will keep a constant temp. God help the electric bill when i come home. ;D

I received another seed order today. I've quickly sown some while the little one is asleep: Codonopsis Clematidea Penstemon digitalis Husker Red Delphinium cultorum Tall Black Knight Delosperma Stardust Coreopsis American dream Polemonium boreale Heavenly Habit Eluesine coracana Green Cat Polemonium pauciflorum Silver leaf Potentilla Melton Fire. I also got 5 Hellebore Lividus that I'm petrified of sowing! ;D I've had a pretty good germination record so far. I don't seem to have suffered too much legginess, maybe it's because of the conservatory roof letting the light in? I'm more worried about this next lot, it gets very hot in there when the sun is out. I just noticed some of my Primula Vialli have emerged, still to show signs of life are Dodecatheon, Semi Aquilegia and Rudbeckia Brilliant Star. Anyone else got any updates?

Isn't it too early for toms? I don't sow mine until the last week of March.
My cactus and suculent seeds are sprouting well in this pleasant weather.

I'm going to print off Mick's instructions for cactus seed sowing, the propagators emptying gradually as things get moved into the GH or are pricked out ;D I've got a few tomato babies at the 2 sets of leaves stage, pricked out gaillardia (goblin), rudbeckia (rustic dwarf), echium dwarf bedding, brachycome, celosia, commelina and melons.....the rest are either still to germinate or too small to prick out. The GH is really snug ;D. Today I got the dahlias in from the garage where they've been sleeping over winter too. It looks like my chocolate cosmos is dead (in the CF) but I'm just leaving it to see if it revives later ;D. Yesterday I sowed a few more hardy annuals....waiting a bit longer for any more...maybe...praps...
