Cerinthe purpurea about to be potted on - four nice sturdy little plants. Sowed a second lot of abutilon after first lot knocked over - nothing from either. Sowed Chilean glory vine over a month ago - nothing , so will make another sowing today. For some reason I'm doing really poorly this year - last year was much better. Oh well ... cheers ...

only have first batch of trials seeds really underway at the mo (and showing nicely - though a mouse has got in and had a couple of sunflowers) but have been entrusted with a pack of T&M giant pumpkin seeds by gardenless tiny neice... no pressure then. Any tips? OM

I pricked out some coleus and achillea 'cloth of gold' today into small trays. The marigolds of various sorts are germinating, as are my sunflowers 'Pacino Gold' (not trial..just pretty), malvas, phacelia, and cosmos (polidor)
Sowed a pot of heliotrope 'marine cherry pie' this arvo in the GH...popped the pot in the heated propagator. I adore heliotrope, introduced to it by one of the bods on the beeb MB.
Rudbekias, gaillardias, dwarf bedding echiums, commelinas and celosia all doing well. (still quite small babies) as are the tomatoes...rapidly running out of space ;D
Peas and sweet peas need potting up (in long bottomless cardboard pots at the mo) but will have to wait until the weekend.

... Cerinthe Purpurea plants still doing well, and one of my hollyhocks 'Coffee Single' has germinated. Still nothing from the Abutilon or Chilean Glory Vine . Also nothing from the antirrhinums which I sowed about two weeks ago. I'm really sad about the Abutilons; they're such beautiful plants and not that easy to buy ... but will keep hoping ... cheers ....

Pricked out my impatiens today...they were looking good....hopefully they will survive. Think my geraniums got a bit of a chilling somehow as one or two succumbed...but the rest seemed ok.

I've got some Stocks, Sweet Williams and Margarittes (sp) in the GH but they seem to have come to a bit of a stand still. Marigolds the little ones seem to be taking and age to germinate. Veggies - Cauli, broc, brussels and cabbage seem to be growing at a good rate though, some have 3 leaves but Toms are looking the same as they did a week ago Carrots are shoinf in the beds but no parsnips yet Going to sow some Leeks and the long sweet Peppers tomorrow

Well, cerinthe plants still doing well - will have to move them from the windowsill to free up space. Two sturdy little hollyhock seedlings - sowed six, two germninated but this could be because I used old seed from last year. Chilean Glory Vine and antirrhinums have finally germinated, although they're still at the microscopic stage. Still nothing showing from the Abutilons ... cheers ...

Well my night scented stock are about an inch tall now....i'll sow a second packet at the end of April.
In january, i sowed a packet of Datura seeds and to date, nothing's come up. So i sowed another two packets mid Feb....again nothing. So i got another packet, this time a different seed company and different variety of datura and sowed them on March 10th. Had a look earlier and they've chitted so i'm well chuffed that i will have at least a few of them in my tropical garden this year.
All but two of the 15 canna rhizomes i put in are showing now so i'm pleased with that too.

No losses to the cold weather which is something. Today I have transplanted 3 dozen Little Gem lettuce plants from a plug tray to 3 troughs beneath the GH staging. My trials tomatoes have been potted on into 3" pots, and I will aim to do the same with my trials sweet peas during the coming week. I have 24 cabbage plants doing well in a plug tray in the GH with a further 20 or so remaining to be pricked out this week. I also need to prick out the rest of my leeks. My main (non-trials) Sungella and Ildi tomatoes have been transferred to the GH today, and I have sown my trials sunflowers. I have also sown some zinnias today which I haven't grown for some years. I will have to try to start planting out my autumn sown sweet peas this week as if they are left much longer they will start to intertwine with each other. My trials chillis are doing well - still inside in the propagator - but my F1 Big Banana sweet peppers were a complete failure, but then again it was last year's seed, so I have resown today with new seed. I still haven't planted my new potatoes, as I somehow managed to sustain a very painful shoulder injury last Sunday night / Monday morning ( in my sleep! ), and I just daren't risk any heavy work yet, which is also the reason for the delay on planting out the autumn sown sweet peas. Thank goodness for light nights again! ;D

I just want to have a recap of how I have done so far: From my first lot sown I have succeeded with: Campanula rotundifolia, catananche caerulea, malva zebrina, trifolium rubens, salvia purple volcano, knautia macedonia, lysimachia atropurpurea, scutellaria baicalensis. The primula japonica millers crimson still haven't done anything [sown jan] Feb I sowed dodecatheon meadia, iris chrysographes, semi aquilegia. No signs yet. March successes have been; aster colour carpet, armeria joystick reds, codonopsis clematidea, coreopsis american dream, commelina sleeping beauty, physostegia, delosperma floribunda stardust, poppy pizzicato mix, penstemon digitalis husker red, polemonium heavenly habit, rudbeckia, sunflowers the children planted, eluesine green cat. No shows so far - delphinium black knight, amsonia, aubretia, polemonium silver leaf form, paeonia, lychnis vesuvius, lathyrus aureas, oenethera, meconopsis, francoa, aristea, lilium martagon, roscoea, ferula, nicotiana sylvestris. But these have not been started long, so I'm watching daily. I know some of them are meant to be tricky, so I am being quite experimental with things like the peony, iris, dodecatheon, primulas, I'm sure I've missed some, I haven't written them down religiously, I'll have to check. ;D

HI Andy ...
<<So i got another packet, this time a different seed company and different variety of datura and sowed them on March 10th>>
Which seed company were these, Andy? I'm thinking I might have to make a hurried sowing from these if I get nothing from the Abutilon. T&M have a gorgeous Blackcurrent Datura ... ever grown this?
... cheers ...

Thanks Andy, I think I'll steer clear of T&M Datura then, like you said it's a lot of money. May try the Johnsons one; I'm pretty sure there's a supplier here. Any advice on the Abutilon ... cheers ...

No CC....never grown them from seed before as they're easy from softwood cuttings....although you do need to have the plants in the first place to take cuttings from !!!
What variety is the abutilon CC....we used to grow loads at the nursery for floral decorating and bedding displays. I've got A. Megapotanicum "patrick Singe" at home in the garden. Hard as nails and needs cutting back several times a year to keep it under control.

Bought an electric propagator at the weekend and put some of my daughters veg seeds in which she bought home from school for the easter holiday and they're now coming up...tomatoes and squash so far.
I also put the daturas in that hadn't germinated (sowed mid feb) and within a couple of days, one was up.

That's good news Andy! I think I have 2 dodecatheons germinated. I'm holding my breath until I can positively ID [had a few stray seedlings so far], but I'm really excited about them. I'd actually forgotten to sow the Lychnis vesuvius, so did some the other day, along with some ragged Robin.
