Yes, the new shoots will spring from anywhere from a foot or so up to right at the top of the growth, and so the look of the plant will suffer and flowering will only happen at the top of the plant.

Hi, Both plants have massive buds about 5 foot up. Seems a shame to cut them down, but i'll give it a go in March !

Hia Mr G! It'll just get leggy and won't flower as well as it could. Don't worry about cutting off those new shoots - just look at your clem carefully and cut just above the lowest pair of shoots and you'll have a lovely bushy plant with masses of flowers later in the year.

Did a few of my Clematis this weekend, it's amazing how many have really good shoot on at the moment. You feel like a criminal pruning them but it will be worth it. I must photograph all mine this year and identify the ones I have not kept labels for.......watch out Plocket if I get stuck I'll be relying on you for a bit of help ;D ;D Also noticed that some of the cuttings I put in last year have started to show tiny shoots.....goody goody more Clems ;D some didn't make it though Hayho it was a bit hit and miss as to wether they rooted and I guess they could still fail.

I know what you mean. I felt like a butcher cutting them down. They had lovely large shoots and looked really healthy. The massess of flowers will look even better !!!

Fingers crossed with your babies Chuckles and I'm so jealous that you've been pruning. I'm itching to get pruning my clems but haven't yet. No worries about asking me about clems but I might not know all the answers!!! ;D
Have you done it then Mr G? You really won't regret it - honestly!

Well Plocket, you were right. The new Clems have just romped away. They must be 8 foot up the shrub already. My new Clematis 'Sunset' has just started to flower, any tips on keeping it flowering ??
