Hi chaps!!
I've planted a clematis in my border near the back, and was wondering whether anyone has any views as to which climbing aid works best. I usually use trellis, but has anyone had success with an obelisk?

Do you mean a metal obelisk-type frame? I grow lots of my clematis up these frames and they look lovely. You just have to choose what look you want - a clematis elongated along your wall or more 3-d ish and standing out.

We have one of those tubular steel arches like you can get from the likes of B&Q or Wilkinsons, but covered with 2 inch mesh chicken wire.
This provides a good framework for both clematis and sweet peas.

The obelisk I have in mind is a rustic willow structure from Instore. It's only 3 pounds and I thought it would fit in with my cottage theme. ;D

It sounds lovely but I'd only grow a group 3 clematis up it. Unfortunately willow structures don't weather particularly well, unless they are alive, so in a few years or so you might need to replace it, and this will be more easily done if you have a group 3 clematis that you can cut back.

Thanks, Plocket. I think the one I wanted to use is a group 2 'dr ruppel'. Hmmm, back to the drawing board! ;D

Well there's no harm in growing Dr Ruppel up the obelisk but you should be aware that if and when the support starts rotting it will be more difficult to untangle. I'm just trying to warn you rather than stop you from doing it! ;D

Oops, My Dr Rupple got chopped right back at the weekend as there were approx 10 new shoots coming up from the base. Oh well I will have to wait and see what happens - wasn't too keen on the candy stripes any way

It will still grow Roxann but you'll get a lot less flowers because they flower on last year's growth. Nevermind - there's always next year! ;D

I've haven't used trellis yet but do have a couple of obelisk's for my climbing roses that work quite well. Have thought about one of those archways for above my garden gate.

Ooh, CB! I'd love an arch, but haven't got a suitable place to put it
