I made one of these last year ( I haven't taken a photo of my one yet - and it's not as good as this one!) If anyone is interested in making one for your own lottie/garden it takes a bit of time to collect all the things you need. I made mine out of 4 small pallets stacked on top of each other. I collected lots of bits and pieces to make the little 'apartments' in the tower. I filled some terracota pots with cut up canes and put those in one section snuggled in with some straw. I used a couple of airbricks ( I think that's what they are called) in other sections. Any twiggy bits from prunning I saved and bundled them together with string. I also saved broken terracotta pots and have tucked little piles in here and there. I added some logs around the edge, and a little pile of thicker branches of contorted Willow from a fellow lottie holders pruning session. Any other gaps I filled with rolled up corregated cardboard and straw. I planted up a trough to sit on the top with winter Pansies and trailing Ivy. It was snuggled up against a bramble hedge that was on the lottie next door - but the chap in his wisdom cut most of it back. He did leave a small section behind my tower but it just wasn't as cosy as it was originally. I may put a couple of more 'floors' in the tower this year too. This will have to be moved to a different corner of the lottie this year to make sure that the 'shelter' doesn't get cut back. I also have a bit of an idea that I would like to do a green roof for it with sedums etc this year. Hopefully I will have lot's of 'guests' booked in for next winter! LLx

OOH, LL, that's what I'm planning to do in the school wildlife garden but I'm going to save some slots to put some of the Lost Property stuff like plimsolls etc. I've been looking for your original thread. Thanks very much for posting the picture - now I shall print it off to show the kids. Can I pinch your idea of a sedum of roof (sempervivums too?)?? Cheers!
