Vine weevils are the beetles and happily munch away at leaves. They have very distinctive bite marks around the edge of leaves similar to catterpillas.
But it's the vine weevil larvae that do the damage. These are small grubs very similar to a maggot. They sit in the soil and will happily munch at the roots. Rhe first you know about them is when the plant wilts (because they have no roots)...so you water it. But by then, it's far too late and the plant is usually dead.
If you keep a lot of plants in pots....fuchsia, bay trees and lots of other perennials, it's always good to give your pots a preventitive treatment just in case.
