you probably don't remember, but at the start of the year i said i would try newspaper to line my hanging baskets, well i did 1 with it, and it worked just fine, i used about 10 sheets. i layered them at different angles, they turned dark green after a few days, might have been the wet weather, but, they did'nt get holes or anything, i wont be laying out a fortune on liners again barbara

That's brilliant isn't it, Barbara? Did you find they needed watering more often? I suppose the weather did it for you mostly anyway! I think that half the stuff on sale at GC's etc is completely unnecessary.......

What a great idea Barbara - I can't get liners for hanging baskets very easily and my English ones are all used up.
I once used plastic with holes in which didn't work very well at all, now I know a good alternative.
Thanks a lot.

when you do 6 baskets you've spent £12 before you've even bought a plant or compost. IF, the weather is drier next year, might be a different result. ;D

I shall have to make sure that I get the right newspaper - don't really fancy having a "page three" on the outside of my hanging basket!!

Hi Barbara, I used newspaper too but to line the trays I stood my plant pots and/or seed trays so as to conserve water. It worked too. I'll definitely be doing it again next year.

I used shredded paper as a mulch around my strawberries this year and it worked a treat in keeping the weeds down and the fruit clean. Didn't work out if it conserved water though

Well my liners only cost me 24p which I think is cheaper than most newspapers hehe I only bought them and 3 baskets because they were cheap. I have nowhere to hang them and they're just sat outside on the floor at the moment. Hey ho!
Not working at B&Q anymore is saving me a fortune ya know!
