For those who have never grown this devine plant, go get a packet of seeds for about £1.50 and sow them either indoors or as a hardy annual outdoors by a window or seating area.
I sow mine indoors and then transplant them into big pots. The flowers are closed during the day but once the sun goes down, the heady scent is paradise on a warm evening.
Well worth the effort

I've tried these two years running Andy and have ended up with leggy spindly things TWICE that have ended up on the compost heap. I'm going to buy another packet this year BUT I'm not even going to think of sowing them till the beginning of April. I've heard dozens of stories about their fragrance but don't think I have ever smelled them. I'm determined to win this year. ;D

The smell is addictive.....the plants aren't much to look at so i tend to plant amongst other more showy plants, but they sure make up for it with their scent!

I remember the smell from when I used to live with my parents, we kept the windows open until the wee hours just for the smell.
Had no luck in my own garden yet, I really need to get more seed for it this year.

Planted them for the first time last year - right next to our seating area, the smell was something else. They do get a bit leggy, but a friend suggested giving them a 'haircut' mid-summer ... and she was right, they came back better than ever. And now I see they've self-seeded ;D ... cheers ...

Well....i sowed my first batch of NS stock on saturday, popped them in the conservatory and covered the tray in clingfilm (didn't have any glass spare)....and today, THEY'RE UP !!!....a full 48 hours to germinate. Now i've sowed seeds profesionally on a commercial basis for many years and i've never ever known anything to germinate this quick. Allysum and geraniums are pretty quick but not 2 days !!!!!!

I ordered some yesterday, plan on putting them in pots so I can move them around the garden a bit. That's what i do Paul....i grow them indoors until they're 3-4" tall then transplant little clumps into big tubs....usually 4 or 5 clumps per tub and put them on the patio.

Do you plant them with anything else or just on their own?

To tell you the truth, i just plant them on their own. I don't expect to see big gaudy displays with them and i'm quite happy to enjoy them in the evenings for their scent.
However, other people do plant with other stuff....particularly virginian stocks

Oh how lovely to see fans of this super flower - they are rather unattractive but the smell is so wonderful - I sow mine outside in pots and then move the pots to where I sit in the garden - place under a bedroom window - heaven
