My neighbour from across the road came into the garden today and asked me why I planted things that didn't like themselves.
As she is a Landscape Gardener I didn't throw her out of the garden immediately, I just asked her what she was talking about.
She walked around and said well:
Parsley - should not and can not be planted where it has been for the last 4 years - it doesn't like itself!!??
Snowdrops - instead of becoming more , they need to be pulled apart regularly!!??
Margeriten ( Leucanthemum/Chrysathemum) - have to be taken out every couple of years!!??
Begonias (remembered from last year) - soil must not be used for other plants.??!!
Roses - never plant Roses where roses have once been planted!!?? (She did have the grace to smile as she told me that!!)
So if all this is true - what about others plants that don't like themselves??

How do these plants know these things?

well don't certain plants take different things from the soil such as veg and maybe that's the reason? Perhaps it's like a form of crop rotation? Or maybe it makes them more susceptible to disease (with nasties lingering around) planting the same thing in the same place?
